Neck Knife

Busse Combat has just unveiled new knife in "neck size"
Just wanted to clerify a point. The Skeleton key isn't new, it's just being rereleased. There are some out there, and if anyone really wants one, I'm sure a seller will appear if you post in the WTB area.

I love my Becker Necker (BK11) ~$32 +/-. I cord wrapped the handle which made it alot more comfortable. The steel, blade geometry and price are excellent.

sorry to be such a noob but could someone please explain what exactly a "neck knife" is and what it is used for? Lol i feel so dumb because I dont know to much about knifes yet....just getting started

Welcome to BF! And don't worry, if you feel like a n00b now, well, you'll be a hopeless knife nut before long... just look at me. Only a couple months here and my wallet needs to be kept away from me when I'm on this site...

In any case, a neck knife is simply a knife meant to be worn on some sort of chain around your neck. As far as common parlance goes, they're usually relatively small (<7") and have fixed blades. The range from daggers to utility knives, though, so beyond the fact that they hang around your neck, there's not really any qualifications for the description.

Another vote for the Becker. Had one for about a year now, just bought another one for my wife and my son has been pestering me for one also. My only beef, is the top of the sheath seems to be cracking a bit which lets the blade slide out ALOT more easily. And this is not a knife that I want slipping down my chest into my tingely parts. While this is a problem that becker will take care of, for now I have wrapped the sheath in a few strips of duct tape which solved the problem. (and gave me some tape if I needed any, I put some extra on.)

About the Spydie Spot, I read that a wharncliffe-like version of it is being developed, named Swick?

Darrell Parent at Mount Sequoia Knives makes a very nice and well built neck knife with a kydex sheath for $30.

Everyone, thanks for all the info I appreciate it. Now comes the hard part picking one, or two, or three...

I have one of the Little Caper knives from AG Russell that Bob W mentioned.

It is a great little neck knife IMO. The steel takes a razor edge and keeps it. Nice size and shape for wittling.

I would recommend it.

Make sukre to get some kind of rust prevention oil for it though. It is non stainless, and starts pitting with rust pretty quick without it. Rust-Free from AG Russell works great.

You're right. I should have written "availaible" instead of "unveiled". Availailble for a limited period of time directly from manufacturer. Blame my english ;)

I'm not a fan of neck carry but I really like the SPOT as a knife. The reverse-S blade design is a lot more utilitarian than it first appears. The VG-10/Micarta version is excellent. Stay away from the serrated versions IMHO as the serrations are too close together to be as functional as other spydies. The SWICK is a 2.25" wharncliffe version, probably in S30V, in the works. Looks VERY tasty!

The CRKT F4 is a lovely little knife, but the sheath is quite bulky. Unfortunately, it is now being made in 420 J2, which would be far from my first choice of steel for something I was actually going to use. If you can find one second hand the older models were AUS-6 IIRC. Mine takes a wicked edge. I would be concerned about my fingers slipping onto the blade with any kind of hard use though.

The SOG Outline is an odd one. Nice, but doesn't get any carry. I put my ring finger through the handle for retention, but I'm not sure if this is how it's meant to be held. Excellent sheath. I just wish it wasn't a serrated tanto!

What do you intend to use the knife for?

I'm looking at something for multiple uses. I run so I'm looking for something small, light, and effective should any situations arise. I'm also thinking about adding something like this to my climbing/hiking setup. Something that I can get to really quickly if I need to should something snag etc... Ultimately I'm thinking its going to be more of a utility knife, but not my primary something second or third in line.

Spyderco Spot, VG-10 steel, PE. You can still get a good price on them at Spydercos website.
