Can anyone recomend a good neck knife, in reference to cost, durability ?? It will be used as a back up 24/7 ... OK maybe 16 - 18 /7 so durability is important

Yikes!! I think if you look up 'neck knives' in the search feature, you'll have about an hour's worth of reading. I mean, the choices are virtually endless!

You can go from cheap(Livesay's NRG, $20) to expensive(Crawford titanium Kasper neck knife, $250) and anywhere in between. What are you going to use the knife for, utility or hide out? What kind of clothes do you wear? Will you carry the knife anywhere else besides around your neck? (Bud Nealy, among others, excels at this) As far as durable goes, I think anything that's out there, except for the special purpose knives like the NRG or other non metallic knives will last as long as it needs to. I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for, and you'll get a lot of help here!

Want something with some utilitarian purposes? I can recommend Newt Livesay's products 100%. Try the NRGS or the Executive NRGS. Of course, the Woo is my all time favorite!

Lynn Griffith (or however the heck you spell his name!) makes some nice looking models, but I have yet to hold one. I don't like the looks of his MNK series much, but most of the other stuff he has intrigues me!

The REKAT Hobbit Utility or Hobbit Fang are great little knives, but are becoming harder to find.

I own about 10 different neck knives and the only one I don't like is a Taipan by Trace Rinaldi. Trace is a nice guy and makes some good stuff, but I just don't like this model.

As advised above, just do a search for "Neck Knives" here on the forums, you will find LOTS of info.

Listen to the4th, as he has a complete "Mr. T" collection going.

I can recommend Lynn’s Back Up Series, specifically the Sniper. I posted a review here some time ago.

Newt Livesay's knives are alot more bang for the buck than anything. The Woo is as good as it gets

I really like my REKAT Fang. Low cost and durable.

I also really like Newt Livesay's neck knives. Like others are saying, lot of bang for the buck in Newt's knives.

The last one is the Spyderco Matriarch in a Mike Sastre neck sheath. This is a nice combination. A little more expensive, but still way under $100. It is a folder and not a neck knife per se, but I like it.

Good luck in your search. There are a lot of good choices available.

I'm kind of surprised no one has mentioned the Emerson La Griffe yet. I'm on the verge of buying one, and had thought that it was very popular among BF neck-knife owners. No mas?

The La Griffe is a very good neck knife. I don't know what it costs but I do like the pattern. I make mostly neck knives because that is what I like to use. I also like to forge 52100 and it makes a very good using knife. For those that are interested They can be seen at www.tah-usa.net/raker . My site is still in the infant stages of developement and I haven't learned how to make the modifications to it from my home. Hopefully I can do something to it before Christmas. I've owned both REKAT models, Emerson LaGriffe, and Livesay's Woo. The Woo is my favorite. Also own Livesay's NRG, but it is only good for certain things.

Okay tell me more about the Woo. It looks too simplistic to me. Is it chisel beveled? What is the apeal?

I have a REKAT Utility Fang, in what way would the Woo be better? Thanks.

REKAT Fang and the Emerson LaGriffe are outstanding little NK's IMO. The LaGriffe can easily be carried 24/7 comfortably.
It's also an outstanding utility blade.
I say that because I believe these two were geared mainly toward self defense apps.
Happy Hunting!

So, what IS the speed of dark?

Ray Kirk puts an AMAZING edge on his neck knives of 52100 and ATS-34. They cut like crazy and don't seem to dull.

Rob Simonich made me an awesome talonite neck knife with a 2.5 inch blade. Beautiful fit and finish. If you like talonite, it's a classic.

Fred Perrin makes ingenious neck knives which combine stealth with great grip and utility.
1075 carbon steel is his preferred medium.

I recommend the three very highly as both makers and as men.

Some examples of their work can be seen on a little photo gallery of some of my own knives at:

I don't think anyone would be disappointed owning a neck knife by any of these gentlemen.

The Woo is STRONG. Simple is good. Nothing fancy, just good, clean design. They are chisel ground. For a utility knife, the LP is better. For a weapon, the woo is better than anything in its size class. Newt really stands behind his work too. Somebody selling a higher priced knife said that you get what you pay for. In this case, you get much more than that. Within the likely use scenario for this type of knife, the $250 wonder wooger will not outperform the $25 Woo.

I have 20 neck knives of all types, and the "most for lthe money" prize goes to anything by Newt Livesay, and the CRKT Bear Claw (plain blade). You can pay more and possibly get a little more, but you can't pay less and get more,IMO.The ones I mention are outstanding values for a limited budget.

I have a crawford paid $85 and carry it every morning on my run.light and strong it is a great little knife

I'll second the motions towards the LeGriffe. I would really want one if the blade were about an inch to an inch and a half longer.

Just something to wet your whistle, here's a pic of a neck knife from Jerry Hossom ( www.hossom.com ).

Oh, yeah baby! This knife Jerry made for his wonderful wife. It has an ancient bone handle, the speckled finish is due to a spray he puts on it to scan the pictures (not that comes on the knife). Just a thought.
