Razor,

Neck knives are very practical.
They are comfortable to wear as long as they aren't too big or thick.
I don't think that 4 ounces would be too heavy.

Hi Razor,

Why not get a Bladewiz carbon fiber neck knife and tell us what you think of it? Come to think of it you could also get a Warren Thomas and compare them!

Just an idea.

The reason I don't care much for neck knives is that most are butt ugly. 2 exceptions are those by Darrel Ralph and Greg Lightfoot. Anybody know of any others that are decent lookers?

Lynn Griffith’s Back Up Series are downright handsome, as well as functional and practical. They have the added bonus of an actual grip on the handle.

I like Warren Thomas, Sean Perkins and Brian Thige.

I'm not sure how practical they are, but they sure are handy. I had to respond to an ADT alarm in my office one night. The police were enroute, but I wanted something just in case. I went to put my jeans on and realized they had a hole in the pocket. Not that I'm paranoid or anything, but I had to carry SOMETHING, but it wasn't going to be any of my Benchmades or Spydercos. So I threw my Stiff KISS around my neck and put on a sweater.

Now, nothing happened, but I feel alot more comfortable about having a neck knife available to me. Gotta get the La Griffe next.

I like neck knives very much, provided they can be worn in some other way as well. If you like Greg Lightfoot's neck knives, which are excellent tacticals, you will also like Brian Tighe's. Bud Nealy's work is great, particularly the Pesh Kabz which is available in san mai damascus with a core of 52100. His multiple carry system is superb, although brian's is also surprisingly versatile. Polkowski's work is also very highly regarded and the best source for that is to catch him at a show or contact Les Robertson. Be careful about what you use to wear around your neck. It is important that the necklace be breakaway to minimize the risk of deliberate or accidental strangulation. Do not use parachute cord. Suitable chains are readily available.

HJK, I agree wholeheartedly. I'd also add that you run the risk of deliberate strangulation as well (or, at least I do when my wife finds out how much I spent on knives). I don't like little blades, but I found one I really like (I posted a pic of it elsewhere in the forum too). This is the only neck knife I'd ever own. This one from www.hossom.com

I have been wearing neck knives daily for years. They are concealable and practical. I could give a rats's ##$@^% what it looks like. I don't plan to model in the mirror with mine, so "handsome" does not matter. My favorite for concealability is the Emerson La Griffe. I have a set of Ti Chaos knives from smoking Hole that are also great. On- Duty I carry a Strider DB (1/4") in the front pocket of my concealable body armor. This is about the toughest tool you can carry around your neck.

Neck knives are very cool.

Very convenient, easy to acess by both hands.

A carry method that does not need clothes.

Find one that fits your hand, works well, and is reasonably concealable and you will be set.

Check out my website for more thoughts on websites and a list of makers and manufacturers of neck knives.

Strangulation? I've seen this mentioned a couple times in regards to neck knives.
Using my wildest imagination I can't think of an incident where i've ever had to worry about strangulation. Either accidental or deliberate. If I did I would have thrown away my neck ties a long time ago.How can a person be be strangled by accident? Working on machinery with a neck knife dangling? If a person is that stupid they shouldn't be allowed to use sharp things. :-)
Unless a person is a police officer or similar occupation i think it's makes very little difference what they use to hang the knife. Lanyards are very popular now. I see them worn by people everywhere. I fail to see how this puts them in danger of strangulation. It's probably more likely to be struck by lightning.

Tom,

Tom,
Strangulation in a "tactical" or close fighting or prefighting situation is a very real risk. Accidental strangulation is also possible in whitewater canoeing or kayaking in among sweepers, for example, or even hiking or portaging in amongst branches etc.
It can and sometimes does happen. But you'll never get me to admit to it personally

HJK and TomW,

In defensive situations strangulation is a very big problem while wearing a neck knife. Just like a necktie, it can be used against you unless it has a breakaway chain.
To make the chain more comfortable, take a length of paracord, pull out the core and slip the hollow tube over the chain. Just don't tie it off.
