Neck Knives- Thoughts

Ok you made great points. I was thinking of day to day activity and not such things as climbing or canoeing. I don't think a neck knife is a very good choice for those kind of activities but as already mentioned the choice of different carrying options would definately be a big plus. Convenient neck carry for around the camp etc. and switching to a better carry as the activity changes makes good sense.

Tom. I don't usually wear a neck knife for conoeing or kayaking. Instead I lash a knife to my PFD like most people, with a larger knife in a belt carry [which isn't too accessible if you're using a spray skirt] or lashed to the boat. But in some situations [most recently, ocean kayaking off Ellesmere Island] I had to wear a Mustang survival/floater suit, and no PFD. In that situation the only real carry option is a neck knife, strategically placed so it doesn't keep moving around or get in the way. With water that cold it seems to me the only real purpose of the floater suit is to make it easier for your body to be fished out of the water or retrieved from the ice after you freeze to death; and the neck knife would make it easier for them to identify the dead idiot as me. As has been said, a neck knife has many uses...
