When I was a construction worker and oilfield warehouse supervisor I carried a neck knife all day every day. Up here we can openly carry a neck knife as knives are not automatically considered weapons. I find it much easier to access, quicker to deploy and return to sheath (you can get quite good at resheathing single handed). I would supplement it with a folder for food prep and other "clean" tasks. My personal choice is one I made for my wedding, and has a much more full handle than other neckers I've used. I prefer neckers due to cleanliness, ease of use and trusting the components more. I carry folders more now due to my work wear (scrubs), and having a grabby 2 year old son who doesn't quite get what sharp is. While backpacking and other outdoors activities on my own time I still grab a necker, usually with a folder and fixed blade- I have too many knives that need rotation to limit to one type!
