Neck Knives?

They're small and can be worn around the neck, which some people dig.

I recently picked up a Bark River Bravo Necker 2 and while I don't plan to wear it around my neck, it's a great size for smaller tasks, and my young son will be able to handle it with ease.

But I know what you're saying. They seem superfluous.
But then again, the same could be said about butterfly knives, OTF autos, etc.
It's just a matter of personal taste I guess.

You can carry them on your neck.

That is their appeal. Maybe you have too much stuff in your pockets. Maybe neck carry is convenient for you.

Maybe it isn't.

This is like when Anderson Cooper didn't understand why waffles existed :P

I'm strangely drawn to neck knives for some reason. I think I like 'em because they're small and concealable. The irony is I find them totally unpractical.

I own several but never wear them. Wearing them under a shirt seems pointless. Wearing them outside a shirt looks stupid and scares the sheeple.

So why do I buy 'em? Beat's me.

Lounging in your pajamas, sweats, boxers, swim trunks, etc. that either don't have pockets or have really crappy pockets...at least for me.

True ninjas shower with one on.

I wear a IZULA 2 every day. G10 scales on mine. Nothing unfinished looking about it. :)

I like them because they are pocketable fixed blades. Love my izula 1 and 2, and my spyderco street beat.

i like having mine around my neck in the shop....makes a easy access utility cutter

While I own a few, I have never carried one around my neck. I've made a couple of pocket sheaths which either hold a pen or Leatherman PST. I have to agree with others, the idea of carrying a necker around ones neck seems pointless (under a shirt that is). Now, over the shirt would be ideal if your fishing or some other task where non-knife folks wont be scared.

neck knives are not so much for urban commandoes, as they are for folks that are bumming around in the woods. It's a good thing to have a sharp, small blade quick to hand when canoeing, hiking, camping.

I tried to like neck knives. I really tried. Mainly because I love the look of some models. For instance the minimalist series by CRKT looks great.

But I cant really make the carry option work for me. When I'm out hiking in the mountains the dang knife dances on my chest, one little swinging bump for each step, just try to run with the darn thing! And if I carry it under my shirt, then what's the point? The neck knife tangles itself with my other gear, and the whole thing has really been a miserable experience.

I've ended up with strapping all my neck knives to the packs I usually carry, or on other gear. Because the whole neck thing, that's not for me. But YMMV.

People actually wear them around their necks? I thought the whole point of neck knives was weight reduction?

That's pretty much it.
A small knife that's easy to carry.
They also tend to fit in pockets, if that's how you swing.

I've never got the whole thing about neck knives myself. And I tried a couple. Small blade, small handle. I think many knife guys buy them just because they are a knife, not for any special use.

That depends.
The Izula has a good size handle.
I've also seen some with a long handle and a short blade.

But yes, there sure are a whole bunch that are just too tiny to hold onto.

Design is quite important.
Today I had the Spyderco Etched Spin with me, and, although it's a folder, it is the same size as ---or smaller than---most neck knives.
Yet it works quite well with its whopping 2 finger grip (yes, that's two fingers) due the admirable attention to grip design.
It's actually quite useable as a knife.

The only time I use mine is when I go fishing, it's convenient for cutting line and if I do happen to drop it in the water and lose it, they're inexpensive enough to get another. If I drop my Sebenza in the water, I might be foolish enough to jump in after it. :).......I've never wore one hunting though, hum, maybe I need to.

I've never understood neck knives either. I've never seen one carried openly and they're illegal to carry concealed here. Seems like they'd flop around a lot if unconcealed. So many better ways to carry a knife.

But if I were a nudist I guess my options would be neck knife or pinching my cheeks together all day.
