Neck Knives?

I have one necker and take it every time I go out hiking or doing wildlife photography. To me their location on a paracord is just convenient when I need to get to it. I think the appeal is just like the appeal Spyderco introduced with the clipit; it's just their accessibility and comfort. It's not for everyone but I love mine: THIS ONE

Neck knives have always interested me but I don't want to look like I am trying to be a bad ass with a knife around my neck. I going to try it this summer cotton shorts and pocket knives don't work well.

I find neckers are a special not EDC thing. I like them when sit down fishing (ice fishing or live bait under a bobber) and in winter for small tasks like line cutting and such.
The Native American use /history is kind of interesting too. Carried point down in an integral pouch in the front centreof a buckskin shirt. No belts or pockets back then.

I've been neck carrying a La Griffe of some sort since 2004. The reason: Top line defense. I was once assaulted at a "friendly" get together by a drunken giant brute of a man who caught me from behind and put me in a bear hug so tight that I could feel my consciousness slipping. I instinctively reached for my P'Kal but couldn't reach it due to the way he had my arms bound up. I had enough elbow movement freedom to reach under my shirt for my La Griffe and proceeded to give him about 1.5" deep, 4" long gash in his arm, which made him immediately let go. If I didn't have my La Griffe on me, I may not be here telling this story. I carry top line (neck knife), mid (pocket and belt buckle knives), and low (repurposed neck knives laced into my shoes/boots). That way, no matter what compromising position I may be put in, I have access to a blade. If weight and comfort are a concern, go non-metallic or get a Warren Thomas. I traded my Emerson La Griffe for a CF/Ti WT recurve tanto La Griffe and it's so light and unobtrusive that I fall asleep with it on just about every other night. Find the right neck knife style for you - one that you can handle safely and with confidence, and one that won't swing around your neck like a Flava Flav alarm clock. People are shaped differently so a neck knife that works for one person may not work for another.

If you've tried a necker and don't like it, try a different one... and give it a chance. It's like getting a tattoo or something - you will definitely notice it at first, but after awhile you'll forget that it's there.

I like neck knives. I usually make some thin micarta scales (if needed) for them. After I make the scales, I make a kydex or leather horizontal belt sheath for them. If the sheath that comes with the knife is a good one, then I just add a belt loop or clip. Some folks get by just fine with a necker, but they've had tendency to snag on things with me.

I put mine in my back pocket with a d-ring attached to a belt loop.

I have a BK11 and 14 wrapped in 550 paracord and an Izula II with G10 scales from TKC. I don't carry any of them around my neck though. I also have a Brous Silent Soldier v2 that I will wear on my belt.

I saw a guy at the Office Depot with a CRKT minimalist hanging on his neck outside his t-shirt. I carried mine a couple of times under my shirt when I first got it, but it was unpractical. I rarely carry mine anymore, but when I do it's with a belt clip,or in my jean's watch pocket.

I also have a BK-11 that I won on a giveaway here. That knife I've only carried on the belt or in the pocket.

I do see how it would be convenient in some situations that people have mentioned here, like when fishing when it's a little easier to reach. Re-sheathing it is also not convenient since you have to use 2 hands and sometimes you're holding what you just cut in one hand and the knife on the other. That's why I prefer horizontal belt carry or pocket carry. Even pocket carry is a little difficult to re-sheath one handed sometimes.
