Neck knives?

I have an ARK. Designed as a defensive last ditch. It's light and has an excellent sheath. It's not a common thing for me to carry. But it's not the same everywhere as it is here. There are places where I would have it on me.
That’s more or less what I was looking at. Don’t want to be the guy to carry 2-4 knives. But like the idea of a designated defensive knife. I don’t do a lot of the “tacticool” stuff. My most carried knife is a SAK Small Tinker. Which is great. And I love it. But have contemplated a blade such as a neck knife as a last ditch for places I have to leave the pew in the car.

Before everyone starts cracking their knuckles to type. I know knife fights are last ditch effort. I do agree with the if you’re close enough for a blade. It’s a VERY dangerous situation. And I don’t want to come across as the “oh I’m a badass.” Because I’m not. I’ve trained in CQC, I’ve trained with knives and basic disarming. But know that’s very dangerous territory. But in places I can’t bring the pew, it’s a small force multiplier if needed.

And I may get one I like. Wear it for a bit. Then decide against it and tuck it with my knife collection. But I have been thinking of a smaller neck knife.

(Rabbit hole) I did order a discrete fanny pack for my pistol (again. In Texas these next few months will be hell.) so I figured I’d try an off body carry. I thought about a dagger (along the lines of the SOCP) to put in the back of the fanny pack. But even as a BM fanboy in the Navy. I loved their product, they go above and beyond to take care of us. I don’t see their prices reasonable. I’ve looked at a few BMs the last few years. And definitely not what it used to be. I had half a mind to order a $20 knockoff from Amazon. But really don’t like the idea of “clones”

Think I still want a more “defensive” minded blade. But rigged this little lanyard up. Can be adjusted to fit. Knots hold secure enough.

If I pull the handle, it’s secure enough for the knife to release. But if I pull the sheath or on the paracord, then it expands the loop. Not break away chain. But will loosen the lanyard enough to not pose a risk to choking

the sheaths have been fine for me.
the 5cr steel is not much
the 8cr steel is better and does okay for me with routine maintenance

I was looking at the black Drop Point one ($36) says it’s 5Cr15MoV.

I think on this knife I’m not super picky on steel. As long as I can get a good edge on it. As I said above. I’m looking for one more defense minded. So it won’t be used much (hopefully ever). So if I have to use it. I can always sharpen later kind of thing. I really like the Spyderco ARK. But want to try something cheaper first. See if I even like the practice of carrying a neck knife before I dive in for a nicer one.

I have two neck knives, one by Koyote in a leather sheath, one by Murray Carter in a Kydex sheath. Both on Dog Tag Chains, which supposedly have an average tensile strength of 25 pounds before they break. I tried wearing them, but they always seemed to be getting in the way. For me a belt sheath, or a SAK on a lanyard in my right front pants pocket works better. John

I’ve neck carried a Spyderco ARK for nearly four years. Occasionally I’ll try to leave it home and just carry a folder in the pocket, but it usually doesn’t last more than a week. I always come back to neck carry. Almost no matter what you’re wearing, or not wearing, you can have a knife with you around your neck, even a folder.

My current “system” is an old modified financial card with neck lanyard and various attachment options which serves as the base for carrying different knives and gear. I can swap folders or fixed blades easily just using a “ranger band”.

I don’t neck carry but I have done it. However, I do pocket carry a small fixed blade daily and I have a lot of small fixies that could be neck carried. If I were to neck carry again, I would go with the Spyderco ARK or the Spyderco Subway Bowie. Both are impervious to corrosion and easily carried discretely. Personally, I think the Subway Bowie is more versatile but it’s blade heavy and doesn’t fit my hand nearly as well as the ARK does. If you could still get the ARK fully serrated i wouldn’t even consider the Subway Bowie.

I’m a big fan of used. Be it here or eBay. I’m sure I could find a serrated one

I bought a Cold Steel push dagger to try neck carrying. It didn't work out as I planned. The knife is hard to access from under my shirts and it moves around. I started carrying it in my shirt pocket and that works a lot better for me. Just my opinion though.

This is my reservation. I’ll try carrying the QSP Canary I have. Maybe get a CRKT Minimalist (as it’s a bit more defensive minded that I’m going for) spend less to see. And if I like it. Then I’ll spring for the ARK

I have this one. I tried neck carry for two minutes, then decided there are very few circumstances during which I would really carry that way. Now, I just pocket carry the thing, sheath looped to a belt with string.

My ARK is the fully serrated version. As designed by Mr. Shirley. I bought mine when he still got a royalty.

I tried it briefly and wasn’t a fan. On the occasions I chose to carry a small fixed blade, I prefer on my belt. If discretion is necessary, boot carry is a decent option for me seeing as I pretty much always wear leather riding boots.

I don't recommend it. The SOCP and its various clones have lousy ergos. The ring being in-line with the handle requires an unnecessary grip change after the draw. Please consider something more conventional without the ring.

I use an multi-clip too with neck carry...Just lock it on to your shirt some.place to eliminate the swimg....
Or a nice slim sheath on A static cord carried IWB or pocket........
