M, I was on the same quest and just yesterday ordered a Simonich Mid Tech Crowfoot in S30V from TAD. They may be gone now since I could'nt get a link to work. But you can check them out at simonichknives.com

OOPS! Just noticed you wanted carbon steel, never mind.

I bet it IS light though.

I call those "needle knives"
Not my taste either.

for the apparent stated purpose, i freaking LOVE my CUDA Mini Talon in Talonite. it has THE BEST handle, SUPER comfy, Super sharp, very nice sheath, and talonite. all for a bit more than $100. and it is a rob simonich design. can one ask for more? i know i can't!

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.I recently got a Livesay LP that looks good but the point looks a little thin for hard use.Time will tell.I may have to see about getting one made to my specs.
Thanks,
m

m,

Seems like there is a tradeoff between cutting ability and indestructibiliy. My vote for the best balance would be the Dozier neck knife already suggested.

My vote for thin edges and wicked cutting ability is a Murray Carter. Both of these knives are less than $150.

Depending on atmospheric conditions (under your shirt! :)) a carbon steel neck knife may need a bit of extra protection itself. This is not a reason to avoid it, but keep maintenance in mind.

Check out the Woodswalker and the Hunter's Scalpel.

Dozier is pricey but worth the money. I have a Canoe with a neck sheath, green micarta handle and brass bolt, D2 of course. The stock is thick, deeply hollow ground, and slides through food effortlessly and cleanly.

I really like the Livesay knives, the Woo is the better weapon, the NRGS and LP are the better utility knives

Try caffreyknives.net

Ed has his EBK knives, they are carbon steel and the blades are just under 3"

They are $125, but I am not sure when he will have some available.
