A thread on another site got me to add a couple of basic pieces of gear to my Becker Necker. Aside from the paracord that came with the knife, I added a BSA Hotspark and a couple of ranger bands (bicycle innertube).

That looks nice. I may try that with my Becker. Is that just standard inner tube? Did you heat it at all before sliding it over the sheath?

Just crosscut innertube. I strung the paracord in a pattern that would hold the sparking tool in place and then placed the bands over everything and they hold it all tight.

If I were to add anything else, it would be additional cordage, as well as a small piece of fatwood.

Do you wear it neck carry? If so, does that setup add too much weight? I'm already borderline with the neck carry of the rather large Necker. I don't think much more weight would be feasible for me. I carry it on my belt most of the time anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter...

If space is a priority on your necker sheath setup, for compact cordage look into braided mason's line, which knots better than the twisted type IME, or braided casting (fishing) line. The mason's line is quite strong for its small diameter and is typically very bright colors so worker's won't trip over it at jobsites. OTOH, the braided casting line is often dull or dark colored so the fish won't see it.

Hey Guys..

Barny..

No,, thats not one of mine...

I don't make 2 sides sheaths for public consumption...

Theres only 2 people I make 2 sides sheaths for and they are both Mil..
I don't like 2 sided sheaths so I generally don't make them...

Thanks for Asking though..

nice kit.... i have one similar, with a crawfod necker....:)

the sheath that came with my becker necker was horrible.... i couldn't get the knife, if i wanted to.... it was like wrestling with an alligator:( i was forced to get another sheath made, by sharpshooter.....

On thing I had noticed was that Ethan Becker had added a signal mirror to the back of his own sheath. He ground the sides of the mirror to match the same contour as the sheath.

This is really the cool way to make a bare bones PSK. I add a firesteel, whistle, compass, and a sharpener. A mini Bic works well too. You can use a little of the inner tube for "booster" tinder to help get your fire going.

Normark: What is the reason for not making two piece sheaths? I've made all of mine that way so that I could have mounting holes on both sides. The second set of holes allow a bit more freedom in positioning. I guess it does make the sheath larger, add points of failure, and you have more work to do when making it. My dogfather sheath is two pieces and prob would have been better as a one piece especially since its a little large for a neck knife.

You've pretty much answered your own questions...

I'll give you my answer though...

Personally I just don't like them. For one they make the sheath wider than it needs to be for no real good reason...

What advantages does a 2 piece sheath have over a fold over sheath ?
Short of strapping it down with Zip strips easier, I don't see many. I don't agree with using para cord to lash it either...

Fit on a sheath is better controlled with a fold over sheath than a 2 piece sheath.

The fit is usually alot better on a fold over sheath.

Less things to go wrong.

It's really a personal thing, nothing wrong with 2 piece sheaths.. Just not my cup of tea....

I get nearly just as many options with a fold over as I would with a 2 piece.. About the only one I can think of is making drop leg rigs is more difficult...
I don't like drop leg rigs either...

 Braided is far superior to twisted. I get seine twine from a commercial fishing supply. It's white, but really a good buy and you can get about ten different diameters. Don't get the dark stuff-- it's tarred.

http://www.seattlemarine.net/productcart/pc/viewCategories.asp?idCategory=1123 is where I buy mine. Get a couple moras while you're at it: http://www.seattlemarine.net/productcart/pc/viewCategories.asp?idCategory=1144

http://www.nylonnet.com/braided_twines.htm has a good chart of size/diameter/foot-per-pound (scroll down a little to "Braided Nylon Twine Specifications")

Just a tip, careful with the ranger band next to your chest hair. Use your imagination why. All I can say is uncomfortable.

[Re: fold-over vs. two piece Kydex]
....

Personally I just don't like them. ...

Your fold-over designs have that Porsche-fast-streamlined-astronaut look to them. The fold-over has one less edge to drag on your leg and catch on stuff too.

That Becker rig looks like the stock sheath.

I've been carrying my NRGS necker kit for several years now. The contents vary quite a bit as it gets torn apart and restuffed. A few constants...

Inova LED light poking out the bottom of the rubber. I think i use that feature as much as the knife itself. Its just too handy to have a light right there pointed at the ground. I use it alot when navigating around camp at night or rummaging through my pack.

Button Compass. It doesn't take up too much room and it is nice to have it there as a back-up or for those occasions that I'm not carrying my regular kit.

Needle and #4 waxed line Takes up very little space and allows me to fix clothes (and sneakers BTDT) that go south on day hikes.

Hotspark and PJ treated Cotton I know I have at least two good fires in there at all times.

Clean, neat, ready to go.

Hey all, it is the original sheath and it S**ks big time. Like was mentioned earlier in this thread, it is like trying to wrestle your knife from a gator (note that knife isn't fully inserted in sheath). It leaves a bit of room to rock the knife to the side, breaking it from the gators grasp. :D

I havn't seen one yet, but I do have plans on getting one of Erics sheaths for this knife.
