im really excited about this little knife and cant wait till it gets here. id like to put some g-10 or micarta slabs on it but will probably just cord wrap it for the time being and eventually i would like to get a different sheath as well. cant wait to modify it [though i doubt it will look anything like soup mongers]. any feed-back on this knife would be appreciated .:D

I just got mine tonight, it is a great blade for the money. The first thing I had to do was reprofile mine, the edge was WAAAYYYY too thick for my tastes, especially in such a small knife. I took it to my Craftsman wet sharpener, then took all 4 of my DMT sharpeners to it, it is perfect now. I'm already looking for some oak slabs for handles...

Great knife and you will really impress some one when they need a beer opened and you pull the necker out to assist them with their needs.

as soon as it gets here its goin through the paces in my back yard. the place where wood chopping / cutting and fire makin happen. id like to actually carry it , but with that dang neck sheath i dont know. hence the name necker i guess. cant wait to start mods on it.probably be here friday i think.

I carry mine 90% if the time around my neck, it hasn't gotten in the way yet. I just have my handle cord wraped with 550 cord.

Whatever you guys do, dont take the finish off and then wrap the handle with 550. Good sweet lord, I wish there was a market for powdered rust. I would be a millionare.
I spent a day in the woods, kinda damp, then sprayed WD-40 on the blade (not the handle) and stored it for about a week. The handle is so pitted now, my dreams of micarta scales may be over.

naw , im leaving the finish on for that very same reason . down in the southeast its damp/humid all year round. i would like to put on some micarta or g-10 slabs in a colour that would compliment the black blade. i dont really have the tools or equipment to do so at this time but surely ill find someone around here that does. i want to make a few diferent sheaths for it also[so i can actually carry it on my belt]. thoughts?

I was wondering about that rust thing when I say that one pic of that great looking Necker that was highly polished with the new wood handle. Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't carbon steel rust reeeeaaalllyy easy if you don't keep it coated constantly?

No, with very minor care carbon steel stays fairly rust free. The problem comes in when you give water a chance to get trapped and sit on the steel for long periods of time.
I normally wipe the blade down with a oiled rag after some use and give it a coat of WD-40 for longer term storage and I never really a problem.

sheath mechanic conversion? pray tell shotgunner. id love a belt sheath with a tech-lock attachment. just something like a belt clip or something would do though, any suggestions would help.

Hello, the sheath mech. conversion is a tec-lock for your sheath, Kydex handle slabs riveted onto the knife and a nice 550 lanyard for neck carry all for around 20.00$, a great deal IMO.
I dont have a Necker yet but when I do, I'm going for it.

Google Sheath mechanic for more info and some good pics.

I've had the necker since early 2005 and loved it. I actually loved it so much the sheath stopped holding it snuggly. I sent it back and after 6 weeks just got it back today. But they send me a brand new knife and sheath. Even though it took awhile I have no issue with them, customer service was top notch. Can't wait to play with this new one.

Mike

i finally got mine in yesterday and love it . the sheath was so tight at first the blade tip would barely fit . i solved that by hammering the knife into the sheath and then putting both in some EXTREMELY hot water for a while . perfect fit now . cant wait to do some wood cutting tests with it .

gutsy, just ordered one this minute from a.g. russell.where in tennessee are you? i'm 40 miles south of nashville...wish there was a few places here where one could actually get things in hand without waiting on the mail!

cleveland to be exact , not to far from chattanooga and nice and close to them thar hills. hey shotgunner , im gettin one of those tec-lock mods and thank you so much.lumpy i think you can fix the kydex after it loses its hold on the knife by using a steam iron and a wet rag . i tightend the kydex insert on my bk7 a while back that way.

smokey mountain knife works is the only place that imediatly comes to mind . it would be worth the drive trust me , its not only one of if not the biggest knife store in the US. people come from all over the US to shop there. its in severville close to knoxville and thats where i go when i want to buy something that i can hold in my hand first. good prices too.maybe well meet up there one day and brouse around [without our wallets of course]. the museum is one of a kind ill say that and you can go to their web site and see for yourself. give holler.

Hey Gutsy, let us know how the guys at Sheath Mech. treat ya and how you like the conversion. I've heard quite a few people here really rave about the job they do. Good luck.

oh yeah, i've been thru cleveland a few times...yes, i checked smkw but they didn't show the necker.I've been in there several times, but the last time,it was....different somehow. more souviener-shopish, if you get my drift.i was looking for a plastic sheath for my srk,and the guy behind the counter had no idea what a cold steel srk was, which i found puzzling , to say the least.but still, it is worth the stop, just to look around...
