My new Gerber Walker S has for a ?tension screw?, at the top, some gargantuan round thingie with a bunch of lines in it. Can I loosen it(the knife is REAL tight) without a specialized tool?

Something tells me that one needs a proprietary doodad of some sort to loosen the pivot. Unless you can grip two of the grooves with your teeth simultaneously.

Weird. I looked at the knife at KnifeCenter. They're charging a $20 premium for the combo edge over the plain. Have to want those serrations awful bad.

Methinks your knife is California bound, unless Tuf-Glide or Militec and many repetitions don't get the job done.

Good luck,

Are you sure its an adjustable pivot instead of a pin thats been pressed with some kind of design ?
You might try some break free or other lubricant and cycling it alot if its not broke in yet. If not, I'd send it back for adjustment, or take it back to the store where you got it and try to get a replacement.
Good luck either way.

I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer... but I've got the sharpest knife in the room.

I bought a Shrade Lake & Walker 2 knife (Piece of crap, by the way)with a similar pivot screw. I think they can only be adjusted at the factory. If your basic lube oils, and repeated openings don't loosen it, you might as well exchange it for another one.
