Bladeforums member Keith Willis makes a nice bird and trout knife. I recently bought a lightly used one and it makes a great little fixed blade etc too.

I recently acquired a lightly used queen #74 bird and trout and i love it. Older model i think, but worth the money if you can find one.

Maybe find a clean, used Western brand L66 or similar. Research and write up a short history on the knife pattern and Western Cutlery. If he'll be with you when he opens it you can sit with him and tell him some stories to go with and imbue the knife with a sense of tradition and living history.

Just an idea. But, the Bark River has always been a sweet looking little knife to me.

Does anyone have any experience with this Boker Plus "Airforce Pilot Survival Knife"? It caught my eye because it has a carbon steel blade.

I have one. It is a very nice knife. It is part of my first love...Stacked Leather. It has seen some belt time last winter, but not a lot of actual use. I just have too many knives to rotate through and carry. It came scary sharp. It's at about 1 o'clock on the saw blade.

I've got a J. Doyle bird and trout that is probably my favorite knife I currently own. Bought it with fishing in mind, but I like it so much that I EDC it about 1/2 the time.

The hardest part was finding something that Santa could bring that wasn't already in my collection.

I have their Canadian Belt knife version of the Grohmann and it's not a bad starter knife for younger folk (and good throw in the truck knife for us older ones).

Starter knife? I actually use and very much appreciate mine (20+ years) and will never have need for whatever grade you figure comes after 'starter'.

The Ka-Bar arrived today, and based on my initial inspection it's quite nice for the money. The blade edge isn't razor-sharp, but it's finished to a smooth edge and halfway sharp. The blade face is attractively polished. The handle pieces, including the leather spacers, brass guard, and aluminum butt, are well-fitted with no gaps or loose pieces. The riveted and stitched sheath is medium-thickness brown leather, which appears to be real leather and not the vinyl or "reconstituted" leather found one low quality imports.

The knife is made in Taiwan and the leather sheath in Mexico. Only $20, it's just what a little boy needs to go on 'adventures' with his grandfather.

Couldn't be happier with the purchase and the product suitability. Thanks to Roger and the staff at Knifeworks for the prompt shipping, affordable prices, and excellent selection. :thumbup:
