Need a camping Axe. I love the Cold Steel Trail Hawk ... but need more durability

I've broken two Cold Steel Hawks splitting firewood. Also, I'm sick of trying to make the steel stay at the top of the handle. 2 hickory handles down and now I broke the hammer off when I used it as a wedge to split wood.

So for splitting firewood... what's a good hawk?

Fine but there's got to be something out there more robust than the cold steel trail hawk. The trail hawk would of been pretty good if the head would stay put.

Have you tried tightening the set screw? Get your self a hawk for throwing and an axe or hatchet for splitting...And please do yourself a favor and get a proper splitting wedge not the head of your hawk.

a Vec Hawk from Equinox Coronado. a trailhawk, with a near indestructible properties that is fast in the hand. very sexy and has a Happiness guarantee.

ask my wife and she will tell you i have slept with it on more than one occasion.

A riggers axe is kind of thin for splitting. An old Plumb hatchet off fleabay would be better.

Mine didn't come with screws. I have a splitting wedge and 3 & 5 lb hammer to go with it. I'm covered with just about everything but a nice trustworthy trail hawk.

rroundy,

Is this what you are talking about? (linky) How much did that set you back?

Others,

I will probably pick up an Estwing as well.

Agreed, but it WILL split, and much better than a Trail 'Hawk will since there's no eye to get in the way of the progress of the thin tapered blade. And man, does that puppy chop!

a hawk is not an axe

True 'dat! :D

Something like this, however, IS an axe. Too bad they're hard to get here right now.

Ohh how bad I want one of those...Come to think of it I have a couple of axes in the shed from Poland that are similar to that. Anyway Ill stop the threadjack now.

Would it be worth looking in Brazil for axes like the one above? Seem to remember Collins et al. marketing those more to Central/South America.

Not sure if those had a 'hawk-style eye to them or just round. Anyone able to weigh in? Nothing wrong with keeping an eye out, for sure.

To the OP, have you looked at hb forge yet? They look to have some beefier hawks, although i have to experience with them personally. I still wouldn't use it as a wedge though. If you do need some help splitting, try loosening the handle some so you can baton on the handle. It'll help save the hammer and eye and if you break the handle, they're pretty easy to replace.
To the derailed folks, i love that axe. Need to find one now with out going to another country though...

I like those. They're like a clubbing hammer with a blade on one side. :D
