hey guys,

My great friend is about to be a father for the second time. when his first boy was born I took to the hospital a Weidmannsheil damascus bladed (I'm not a folder guy, but had two blades of about the same size and shape folded from opposite sides) knife and gave it to him to hold till he's old enough for it.

with a second boy about to be born in the next couple weeks I need to get something. I'd appreciate input. and if you point me towards ebay, retailer, individual that is all fine too. I have no problem just going with Case, and I know they're collectible and have no flys on them so to speak, but they're also pretty common.

Criteria:

1. I'd like it to be traditional, so no spyderco/cold steel
2. Hopefully not too pricey that Weidmansheill was over 100, but I've got my daughters birthday and a family trip to colorado in June, and just ordered another custom fixed blade ;)
3. i personally like carbon steel blades. I think they age well (no patina on stainless :( ) and sharpen easier for me
4. i don't like the shape of congresses

thanks guys!

here's a couple I like
candy striped trapper
doctor's

Some of the GEC stag handled traditionals are very nice. I'd probably go with one of those.

Great idea, OP!

I think you're on the right track with a Case traditional. An alox SAK (perhaps with space to engrave his name and birthdate on it) might be an option as well, although it's stainless rather than carbon steel.

Thanks a lot! I never heard of great eastern, they look nice, not inexpensive, but lots of options. I like their sunfish, I don't know why but I've always liked sunfishes, never owned one and don't know how practical they are, but they appeal to me for some reason. Is the place linked from their website the best place to buy them?

Should I go ebay?

thanks guys.

Cant go wrong with a case canoe or trapper/mini-trapper. that combo started me on my steel addiction

Another vote for a Case swayback jack. Great knife and the wharny pattern is great for slip joint newbies in that it encourages use that would cause it to close.
