Hey ! First post :) Nice forum !

I am looking for a 50 dollar multipurpose knife with a fixed blade. Something that will survive a 6 month trip to the forests of south america.
Needs to have a good useful case with it and lastly, needs to look good (hehe)

I've been looking at SOG Fusion, SOG Seal and Boker Bowie which looks like the winner for me so far in terms of price/availability
Are these any good ?

If you're going on a 6 month adventure to tropical South America, I would budget more than $50 for a good fixed blade.

I would get a RAT/ESEE RC-4 or 6 depending on whether or not you expect to chop with it. A bowie looks badass but isn't going to be particularly useful in the forest unless you're skinning game.

Then on top of that, equip yourself with a solid multi-tool and folder for backup use and more delicate work.

Edit: Tell us more about this trip of yours. Sounds epic

I don't know about the Seal and the Böker bowie, but I advise you to stay away from the fusion. Pretty bad knife.
Again, I can't say anything about the SOG seal and the Böker bowie, but I know the Buck 119 is good. Looks very much like the Böker bowie.

If you're going in the jungle for 6 months, you might as well buy a more expensive knife. Maybe the ESEE junglas? Should be $100-ish when they're for sale (soon).

You cannot beat a Buck 119 'Special' for a good utilitarian fb knife. Les Shroud, aka TV's 'Survivorman', even carried one in a couple of his episodes. WallyWorld still carries the USA made 6" clip point knife for ~$35 - with a nylon sheath. Other versions include a leather sheath. A 'classic'.

Stainz

Get 3 Mora knives off of Ragnar. If you happen to lose one...you'll have 2 spares.

Buck 119
Buck Nighthawk
Benchmade Rant dropped point
3 assorted Mora knives from Ragnar's Ragweed Forge, as suggested above.

The Beretta Loveless zytel dropped point hunter is my favorite <$50 fixed blade, but it's more of a specialized hunting knife (it's hollow ground) than a general purpose blade.

These are the best ones I can think of for under $50. Truthfully, my suggestion is that you double your budget and get a Fallkniven F1. There is no finer woods knife regardless of the money.

Buck 119, Mora 2000, Mora Carbon Clipper., Gerber Big Rock. Gerber Gator fixed in s30v. All or a couple of comination of these should do the job.

You could go a little more and get the BK-2. it's a darn tank of a knife.

spend more please and get a rat/esee knife, rc4 or 5 or junglas would be could, i would also recomend a multitool/folding knife

You could spend more but it is completely unnecessary. People here have given you some good choices, no need to double what you want to spend.

I have to go along with the Mora. Pick up a couple, then when you get to where you are going buy a machete from the locals.

I doubt you will find yourself needing anything more.

Thanks guys ! I can't really afford more, and I already have two smith and wesson folders I got last month.... The buck looks great and I can get it for cheap ! Seems like you guys love it ! Is that tip on the edge of it's handle metal or plastic ?

It's aluminum.

I can't believe I forgot this one---the Buck Nighthawk! One of the best values in knives to be found. I actually like it more than the 119 because the handle is grippier.

To amuse yourself, go over to http://www.knifetests.com and watch him destroy a Buck Nighthawk. You won't believe the abuse this poor knife endures before it gives up the ghost! I know that many people hate the knifetests guy and think he's a clown, but it is fascinating to see what he did to the Nighthawk before it broke.

I think the Buck 119 will serve you well in you SA trip. A number of the other knives that were recommended were carbon steel, but since I'm guessing you are not a huge knife knut at this point, and given the climate you can expect in SA, I think a stainless steel knife like the Buck is a better choice for you.

Have a fun, safe trip!

If those are your only choices I would travel with the SOG, I would also spend a little more if you can and maybe get a $100 Seal Pup/pup elite.
Private message me and I can help you out with a discount code to save you some cash move up to a higher priced SOG but at the price you are comfortable with.

Cold Steel GI Tanto - I don't know what it is about this knife but it is incredible. Cheap to boot too, especially if you can find the 1st edition with paracord-wrapped handles. Less than $20. Need a better sheath though.

See these pictures here: http://www.knifetests.com/page26.html

Not the CS GI Tanto. It's 1055 Carbon Steel. Rust at the drop of a hat and does not hold an edge, although it is easy to sharpen. The recommended Bucks are a much better choice. They are stainless, easy to sharpen, and hold an edge reasonably well.

There have already been many good knife suggestions so I won't muddy the waters by adding to the list.

Just for the sake of clarity; sometimes we read more into a post that is actually there. The OP didn't exactly say he was going on a six months trip to South America. He may or may not be going on such a trip, but in either case he'd like a knife that would 'survive' such an adventure.

So would I and I have no plans to undertake such an excursion, but if I did and only had $50 to spend on a knife there are far worse choices than the 119 or Nighthawk
