Welcome to the forums. I would submit that there are a ton of $50 knives that can easily survive a six-month trip to South America. In fact, I'd be really surprised if any of the natives down there who use their knives day in and day out own any cutlery that cost more than $50.
I completely agree. I certainly respect other people's choices of knives here and it is wonderful to have custom knife makers and high end producers who make knives for those who want something more original, better finished, and using different steels. However, like him or not (and of course he's not testing each knife using an exact scientific method) the knifetests.com guy has clearly demystified the belief that more expensive knives are stronger and harder to destroy than knives costing under $100. The Busses are so thick that they would be hard to destroy even using common 440A or 1095. I say this not as a dig cause I sure as heck would grab a Busse if I could afford it but the fact is the Cold Steel Bushman in a cheaper and thinner steel was able to withstand more abuse than almost any knife outside of the Busse, which has a blade thickness almost twice that of the Bushman.
So I say if you can afford it buy the high end knives and enjoy the fine craftsmanship. If you're really tight and can't afford much, a $20 Bushman or one of the fixed Buck knives (119 or Nighthawk) along with many of the fine US made Ontario Knives that sell for $40-$50 dollars will give as good a service as anything costing 3-5x the price. I'm not sure what the guys who've spent time in the jungles would say but I would assume that one would want a longer blade (but maybe not if one carries a machete). If an under 6" blade works then the KaBar Becker BK2 for $53 shipped on ebay is a great choice (though pretty heavy) as well as the Benchmade Rant 10502 Drop Point in 440C with a 4.5" blade sells on eBay new for $45-$55. Best of luck.....
When I go into the jungle in the Philippines , I carry a Cold Steel Bushman and a Mora 510.
Covers all bases besides a machete , which you can get easily locally. I'd sure hate to lose a $100+ knife , especially away from home. That's why I take those.
