Need a fixed blade for a Go Bag...

i guess my question would be...what exactly is the intended blade's purpose? if it needs to be your one and only do all survival blade-i'd lean towards a bk2.
if it was meant to be a fighter, i may lean towards something a little leaner....
you know, they make smaller beckers now....
and probably the most important question...what are you intending on spending?
only you know what knife is right for you.....

4-5 inch, convexed, strong and tough steel ( 3V, L6, A2, O1, 5160, 52100, Infi, etc). Guard at least on the bottom. 3/8th inch, no thicker. Good, protective sheath with multiple carry options. 2 straps personally to keep it in the sheath even if upside down. Fire stick plus tinder. Lastly a DMT bifold blue/black, plus a sheet of wet/dry sandpaper, 400 grit.

An old standby is the kabar USMC. All of the ESEEs are solid. I think the 5 is too heavy and not as good of a knife as it is pry bar. I would pick an ESEE 4 personally.

What's your budget? I really like the knives made by Ed Martin. See www.martinknives.com. Look at the bushcraft tactical or SERE. Everything I've read says Ed makes great knives, they hold their value, and more importantly they are very high quality. I've got an order in for a SERE right now.

I owned an ESEE 5....for about two weeks. I could not find anything it did well: it sucked at being a knife, my Home Depot crowbar does crowbar better, a thrift store baseball bat does better at being a bat. I couldn't find anything it actually did well except appear in knife photo threads on the web.

The other ESEE's are great but that slab of steel called the ESEE 5 seems to be a "we made it because we could" kind of knife. The ESEE 3,4,6 are all solid performers.
