Need a Gentleman's Folder...

Take a look at a Xikar Excursion 158. Very nice little framelock folder with carbon fiber scales. Blade is about 2.5" and you can pick one up for around $90.00 to $100.00

Everyone has there own idea of how elegance should look. The Benchmade 850 comes pretty close to mine. :)

The rainbow anodizing is a lot more impressive in person than in my dubious picture...

LATELY Spyderco has been the Champion of that very thing.

Check out a Salsa or Lil' Temperance or any of their other smaller knives.

Outside of that, you could always carry a CUDA MAXX, SOG Pentagon Elite II or Cold Steel Vaquero Grande and a BIG smile on your face!:D

I think the Chris Reeve Mnandi is the best gent's folder available today. It will cost you more than the others mentioned thus far; but,
you won't regret it.

Yet another thought might be the BM model 940 series, they are quite attactive, very light to carry, and pack a great deal of cutting power into their size.

I've tried carrying my BM943 to work several times but don't feel comfortable with the clip visible. And loose it "floats" around in my dress pants making it uncomfortable. I want to forget I have it with me until I need it.
That being said there are some sweet custom runs on the BM website. That carbon fiber 940 looks sweet!

I would recommend:
- BM 310 Levitator
- Spyderco SS Cricket
- Reeve Umfaan
- Reeve decorated small Sebenza

Thanks,
Matt

The CRK Umfaan and Mnandi are great choices. The William Henry line certainly looks good and are highly thought of. Spyderco's Kiwi should rank high on the list.

I have tested many a "tactical" knife for use in the pocket as an alternative to carrying a slipjoint.

No matter what kind of pants I am wearing, I keep developing the same criteria for my ideal "gents" knife that I can drop in my pocket (no clip showing) and one that doesn't turn and lodge in such a way that it shows a big signature walking down an office corridor, entering a larger room for a meeting, etc.

I tend to think that my max dimensions are:

3.5 inches long. 3.25 is better. Any smaller than that and they tend to be hard to open one-handed, with the Cricket being a notable exception.

Maximum weight of 2 ounces, with 1.5 or less being better.

Opens well with its clip if it has one) removed - many don't and the designers rely on the clip being there to assist in opening the knife. My ideal gents pocket tactical works well with or without its clip.

My current daily gents carry is a Bob Lum Mini Stalker. It has a tactical air to it and is very tough and elegant. Unfortunately, it will set you back $-wise.

The two knives that it knocked out of my pocket are a William Henry Pearl Lancet and a Mnandi. I keep trying new ones, but the Lum if firmly entrenched these days.

Check out the CRKT CRS2 (I think) Titanium frame lock, 2.5" blade. They're out of production but you can still find them (Bestknives). Ofcourse the small Sebenza is beautiful and univerally regarded as #1.
Watchout.....if you think the knife quest is not a destination!

Spyderco's Herbst is a nice little Gent's knife.I just obtained one in a trade and it is sweet!I don't know if they're still making them or not.tom.

if one is really concerned about sheeple -
after all they are People - friends, family etc. :) .......

then perhaps a knife that is easily recognizable and not normally regarded as an offensive weapon may be in order.

Taking into consideration of the description "gentleman" -
may I suggest the very slim aluminum handled 2 bladed SAKs?

Examples of some Very thin SAKs
fc5bee30.jpg

left to right - Victorinox "Popular" (Swiss/international model # 0.6901.20), Wenger Patriot, older Victorinox Alox Bantam (w. Keyring - Swiss/international # 0.2301.26), Vic Alox Bantam (no keyring 0.2300.26)

How thin?
fc5bee31.jpg

this photo displays life size on my monitor -
left to right Vic Popular ~3/16"; Wenger Patriot just shade over 3/16"; both Vic Alox Bantams ~7/32"

My top suggestion is the newly imported to the USA
Victorinox Alox Bantam - US model # 53949 with checked/cross-hatch finish about ~$13

Even more "gentlemanly" is the
Victorinox Silver Alox Secretary - US model #54289 - about ~$10

Even if you don't have these as your main EDC -
they are cheap enough and slim/thin enough, that you could also have one as a "backup",
or use when even your "other choice" may intimidate.....

The CRKT Tighe Tac is - despite its name - pretty "gentlemanish". The large version's blade is a fair bit over 3", the smaller Tighe Tac's blade is well under 3". The pommel is a bit pointy and bites a bit into my hands, but that knife's just very classy looking.
