Need a good, affordable EDC knife

Just get yourself a Griptilian (BM555) and open your eyes to the next level. YOU WON'T REGRET IT.

Every (well, most every) brand has fans... and for a variety of good reasons. I won't take anything away from any of them, but there's nothing that'll please you (and impress you) as much as your first axis lock knife... that is - if you've never owned one before. There are better knives than a Benchmade Grip (regular or mini) but for the price they're hard to beat. Once you hold it and play with it, the premium price you'll pay relative to less expensive offerings will seem meaningless. Watch a few Youtube videos if you haven't already... and fwiw, if you do pull the trigger on one, go for the 550 or 555 (thumbhole style) they do permit more precise control.

The AXIS lock is something. :)

But for a lower cost, and extended durablity I would like to second the recomendation for the Spyderco Endura. It has a reinforced tip that will handle moderate prying no problem.

I've always sworn by thumb studs...are the thumb holes just as efficient? I guess I ought to try and find some time to swing by a place that carries them so I can play around.

A couple of thoughts ...

What you describe can probably be answered with a Case 'Trapper', 'Canoe', or 'Seahorse Whittler'. Take a look at them - they are nice, but no locks ... basically they are your "Grandaddy's knives", and there is nothing wrong with that - I own 2.

If you do want something with higher tech steel, and to "take the next step", then do yourself a favor, and find a Benchmade and a Spyderco dealer, or some online place that will allow free (shipping paid) returns - then "handle" at least a few the following:

Benchmade mini griptilian (either thumb stud or hole - comes both ways - also comes as an H2O model for CR)

Spyderco Persistence, Native, Delica, Salt

... there is a reason these knives keep getting suggested - try them. You may spend a shade over your budget, but every time you open it, you will not regret it. You cannot make the best decision by looking at pictures.

Just my .02 ...

wow - just saw the date on this - hope you are enjoying the knife you likely purcahsed 3 months ago!

:o

In my opinion also as a tech guy at my workplace I carry the kershaw select fire, it has four screw driver bits with a bit driver, it should suit your needs.
