Need a good contest

A random drawing of Forumites sounds good, but I also like AG's idea of having a certified dealer verify the number knives owned by members. It does show if one has really backed the company.

I think random chance is best. Contests based on who can identify something or do whatever at the point when the announcement is made rewards those who happen to be online at that point in time - unfairly so IMHO

...among who is a good question. Maybe set a miniumum # of posts somewhere within the Spyderco forum. Maybe something else, but something that rewards being active here. I also feel that basing it on the number of knives one owns is unfair - those with money or those older than most of us would have a distinct advantage.

How about giving the individual who can name the best-selling Spyderco model ever a Spydie knife of their choice. They would have to name the model exactly, i.e., model #, blade and handle material, blade style,etc...

Sal, I think I prefer luck. Or if it is a skill contest set a deadline and draw from all the correct answers. I don't like the first to post kind of deal because I only have access during the day during the week .

I'd like to see something that combines at least a perception of skill with a lot of luck -- like how offices sometimes run pools to predict the exact date/time of the birth of an employee's baby (not that our contest would be anything like that) -- makes for fairly even chances of winning, combined with a bit of feeling that one has control over one's destiny :-)

Sal,

why not to use unluck instead of luck ?

Because lucky people don't need to have any knives, but unlucky people desserve a good knife like the STarmate which will continue to work when all the other will break!

You should put all the name inside a big hat and remove the names one by one and the last one (the unlucky one) should win a Starmate.

This knife should bring luck to that unluck winner and he should never win again, of course !

Starmate brings luck, so don't forget the unlucky people !

How about "there I was" with my Spyderco type stories?

Could be in a couple of different categories (funny, life-threatening, utility) with an appropriate Spydie awarded for the best story in each category (i.e. SpyderWrench for the best handyman story, etc). Maybe even a category for the best piece of fiction.

Stories are posted under a specific forum topic with a deadline for submission.

Sal then gets to add more stories to his testimonial file for potential future marketing use.

the idea i like best so far:
1. random drawing from active spyderco formites.

other ideas i like:

2. plain random drawing.
3. pick a post number and let that be the one.
4. judged stories.

other than that, maby just give us all one, then itl be fair.... :^)

I think the pool idea would be a great Idea...

I too, would prefer some type of brain teaser/trivia. How about a rare spyderco (I.E. Police model with carbon fiber handles, etc.)given as a prize? Speaking of trivia,Sal why did you decide to name your company SPYDERCO? Just wondering. Thanks.

Luck is good for me (even though I never seem to have any). Please avoid first to post or most frequent post ideas as they cut those of us who only get to post at night out of the picture.

Thanks and keep up the great work.

Sal,
With school as busy as ever, I'm always late to post on topics! Luck gets my vote, even though I do like trivia contests. With luck, it's simple. Either you're the one or not. With trivia, someone can be partially correct (depending on the nature of the question), and that could cause a problem. Oh yea, a Starmate as a prize would be great!

What are you doing? Get your hands off my knife, sizzle chest!

How about luck and guessing. Something like "How many Ladybugs would fit into a 1 liter Coke-a-cola bottle?" or something along those lines. I'm sure we will think of something.

Spark - Is it possible to get a print out and keep it current, of every forumite that posts on the Spyderco forum?

Sal,
how about prize for the first "contest" going to the forumite who had the best suggestion for the determination of a winner? You know, the best idea for a "contest"? This idea can then be used for conducting the NEXT contest...?

This way, you KNOW that the guys who has given contest ideas in this current thread, are the REAL active participants in the Spyderco Forum at present, and I think it sould be fair to obtain a winner from this group...?

I REALLY like the "write a Spydie story"-idea, but why do we need to do that to win something? Why not write such stories ANYWAY. It can be hosted on a central server, I'm SURE someone on th eforums will be willing to host such a "library"...

I am AGAINST "doing something, performing some task to win the contest" (that excludes the trivia that was suggested - that's another matter), as this spurs people on to performing tasks JUST with the intent of winning. I feel that we all post (without materialistic gain) in this forum, because we enjoy it. So the contest should keep in line with this, and NOT induce another kind of behaviour...

I don't care what the contest is as long as it's a "luck" based game and I win.

I told my neat Spyderco story already and didn't win anything. I'll think twice before telling it again for free!

(I did use the story to sell alot of Spyderco's though.)
