Need a good knife with a very limited income.

I will agree with the others get the spyderco native. It has a spear point and the handle has a safety grove on the lower portion of the blade by the joint as a secondary precaution if the lock fails. NOT that the lock will fail, but it helps with the grip of puncturing and what not as you may need this nice feature. It is a one handed opening folder and is really light. This is my EDC and I could not be more satisfied with it's performance. I use this for landscaping duties, cutting rope/twine, puncturing and cutting bags of dirt and have used it to cut a few ficious rose bush stems. The blade is razor sharp out of the box and lightly oiled. It may be a little stiff out of the box but flipping it open a few times lets the oil work in the joint. It is around 40 bucks at wally world far cheaper say if you got to an outdoor store.

Whatever blade you chose I think stainless would be more suitable for your duties. Also I have a ka-bar dozier one-handed opening clip-point blade I just bought for like 20 bucks I like the lightness and sharpness of the blade albeit I have not put much work on this knife yet as it is in a smaller survival pack.

Here are a few. Boker Trance, Spyderco Byrd or Native, Kershaw Vapor, Benchmade Vex is close to your price range. Those are just a few. There are some nice knives in that price range and any of the brands I have mentioned you cant go wrong with. GOOD LUCK! Kevin:thumbup:

I've been using my CRKT M-16 13M (military edition - it's just green) for two years now as my every day carry. And as far as EDCs go, I don't think you can beat it for the $49 that knifeworks asks for it.

It is TOUGH. Believe me... it's been through military abuse on deployment and a lot of places - even saved a Honduran farmer's last cow with it (long story). Anyways, I'm ordering another one because I lost that one... Highly recommended!

Well, thanks to all your help fellas, a nice man in brown just delivered to me Kershaw Vapor II. This thing is amazing, can't wait to test it on something!!! Here I go!

Kabar Dozier Large Hunter. This one really surprised me. Aus8 about as good as it can be heat treated.

The Vapor II is my choice for an inexpensive everyday folder. The edge needs some work, as it was pretty obtuse for my taste, but I generally sharpen shallow enough to require thumb stud removal. YMMV. With a high polish edge, it holds an edge for a surprising amount of time. A very course edge will last longer, but on a more limited scope of work.

On another note, if you had not already received your knife, I was going to suggest making your own. If you have a file, a coping saw and a hacksaw, and something solid to clamp to, you can make a small fixed blade knife pretty easily, if you're not concerned with looks. 1095 carbon steel is pretty cheap, see Admiral Steel for more that you'll need to screw up twice and still have plenty left over. The only thing thats kinda tricky is a heat source to harden the blade. I've made a couple ~3" blades from 1095 and O1 steels and used a Mapp Gas torch for hardening. Of course this is not the optimal heat treatment, but for a first time try, it will work ok. For a one shot deal, tempering can be done in an oven at home. See the Shoptalk forum for instructions on heat treating, or scan the internet for other sources. Or you could spend a little more on steel and get an air hardening grade and send it out. The price goes beyond $40 pretty quickly doing that though, as some steels can be quite pricey. Anyway, the point is knives are pretty simple, as long as you arent too concerned with looks, and can experiment some.

Spyderco Native. For $40 you will not find better steel + great ergos. you can get it @ Walmart or on their web site

If you're thinking folder, it's a good way to go. If you are thinking fixed blade, the Cold Steel ?Bushman is hard to beat.

i would get a spyderco byrd or one of the cheapo CRKT's, or save and get a BM griptillian, spyderco endura or delica.

for a working knife, you cANT go wrong with the "NEEDS WORK" by kershaw. Seriously, check it out...you wont regret it

Assisted opn, USEFUL blade, HIGH quality craftsmanship
