need a good tool to clear the woods for hunting...looking for suggestions

alright im just looking for a hatchet or machete or big knife or something to clear any branches or small trees that might limit my shot...price range 50-100 or anything around there. thanks for any ideas
 
Gerber or Fiskars folding saws would be my recomendation. Its you want a hatchet look for them by gerber and fiskars as well.
 
Lots and lots of choices. Everything from a $10 carbon machete to a larger knife from several companies. For your price range, I'd suggest a cheap machete and a hatchet.
Since it was mentioned, a machete with a saw back would give you even more variety as needed.

BTW.... You don't need expensive tools for this job. Check out auction sites for cheap used stuff.
Try to carbon steel, and never mind a little bit of wear or rust. You can easily clean it up.
 
Ontario G.I. machete or the Gerber sport axe.

TCK- how is the hook used? It looks as though it is pulled toward you to get the small stuff that doesn't require a chop or if there is not room for a chop...? :)Regards, ss.
 
woodman's pal eh?(im not from canada...pittsburgh area) i always thought that was just another ad that you could find in the back of hunting magazines. but if its worth the money im always ready to spend it. and as far as the local auctions...i have no idea where to even start looking
 
I was going to ask about the Woodman's Pal. Aren't they about $80?
I'm gonna save my pennies.
 
Matches .. for free. Hey I was kidding, please don't do it! Get an Ontario Machete with saw back blade in 1095 for 20 you're all set, and go easy on the trees!
 
so many options...im a sucker for anything more expensive. im not sure why...i guess its just the way my dad raised me. i did just save a ton of money on a rangefinder yesterday at sportsmans warehouse...$300 for a leica LRF 900 so i have some money to spare...but it seems that its definitely not worth spending more than 80 or so
 
I like a longer machete for clearing away things that bite back like multiflora rose and poison ivy and such and for reaching higher limbs without a ladder or climbing or something. The military machete from Ontario holds up well to the bigger stuff too if you don't thin the edge down too much, and the sawback model actually works though not near as fast as a decent bow saw. I also take a bow saw for cutting down bigger stuff more quietly.

i wish i knew how to sharpen things...i just found my grandpaps old machete that he made(he was a precision tool grinder...and the highest ranking employee westinghouse had) but its pretty dull. im thinking about attending a knife sharpening demo at sportsmans warehouse on the 16th
