I've got a metal detector and when I hunt parks I need a knife to cut through grass and into dirt. Probably want something with a serrated edge, and strong enough to take some prying, and maybe even some pounding into dirt. Something that I can basically beat the crap out of and store away dirty on occassion. :) Fixed blade, around or at least 5" in length. Oh, keep it under $50.

I've been looking at Kabar, Camillus, and Ontario survival, military, pilot type knives.

What's your opinion?

I have an old Kabar for stuff I don't want to use a good knife for. For cutting grass, I have a linoleum knife.

I use an Ericksson Mora knife to cut carpet, edge the lawn, dig weeds and other dispicable chores I wouldn't inflict on a 'good' knife. Under $10. One of the world's best knife bargains.

I tried to find one on the internet to look at, do you have a link?
Do most hardware stores have them?

"strong enough to take some prying and maybe even some pounding into dirt."

I agree with the glockman, a LARGE screwdriver or other tool(small shovel?) would be sufficient for that kind of abuse. A knife is a tool that should be used for what it was designed for....cutting and slicing.

Just my two cents...;)

well, I will be cutting and slicing through grass. A screwdriver can't cut a U shaped plug that I need to cut.

A small gardening trowel would; not quite as sexy though:cool:

Cold Steel Bushman is probably a little long, but I understand there is a mini-bushman for what around $15 or less maybe? Should work great for your application. My Mora2000 Survival knife (the ragweed forge swedish knife catalog at http://www.ragweedforge.com/SwedishKnifeCatalog.html should take you there) is only $25 and would probably be more comfortable than the bushman! You have a lot of options if you are willing to go up to $50!

But it might be much cheaper still to turn a digging-prying tool like a cheap hand trowel into a cutting tool by sharpening an edge! That way you can have both cutting and prying in an inexpensive tool.

I have an old Garrett metal detector that I use alot. I use a long, narrow garden trowel to cut plugs and have never had a problem with "killing the grass". If I was going to use a blade I would probably use my CS Bushman. At the end of the day of digging it would pretty much be a garden trowel anyway. Good hunting and digging:) .

Hey, Gary007-

What you need is a landscapers\gardeners bulb and sod knife. They are available through professional landscaping suppliers.

They are also available through the major online metail detector vendors.

Basically it is a large wide bladed 'knife'. It has serrations on one side and a smooth edge on the other. They are of a reasonable quality for what you need and also come with a leather pouch. They have a large heavy duty plastic handle that is water\weather proof. They most certainly require little maintenance-they can be ridden hard and put away wet. All of the maintenance can be taken care of with a can of WD-40 and a file!

If I had a link I would post it, if I find a link I will post it also.

Hope this helps...

Go to leevalley.com and check out their Japanese garden knife,by your description it's exactly what you're looking for.

There are tools specified for metal detecting, I have a garret it works great. Some tool's include probing tools, kinda like screwdrivers some people are mentioning but they have a small ball on the end, about the same size as a BB. Do a simple search for metal detector tools, youll find some. I forgot what I used to cut the grass, I'll ask my brother when I see him next time.

Sounds like a trowel will do you right.

That's similiar to what I used to use. I think mine was actually a diver's tool. It had a rubber handle and a chrome blade. The blade was somewhat sharp on one side and somewhat serrated one the other and the tip was slanted up and blunt straight across. It also had a lanyard if if remember correctly.

Diver's accessories might be another place to look though. Just a thought.

You don't want to use a tool like that as your primary treasure searching tool, since it has a sharp tip it can damage/scratch your treasure like a coin. You will want to use that probing tool that I mentiond before. Also make sure you get a tool with serrations on it.
I found my old metal detector it is a garrat groundhog, that I got at colbys in San Diego.
