Yes this is very off topic, but I have come to notice that many of you guys either work in the gun industry or are very knowledgeable of firearms and I would trust ya'lls opinions more than many elsewhere on the internet. Besides, I find knife and gun collecting to go together quite frequently:) So I was wondering if any of ya'll have any experience or opinion on the Remington Versa Max Tactical shotgun. I have scoured the internet finding very little negative feedback on it with the models produced within the past year or so, however I am aware that Remington is part of the Freedom Group and quality has gone down on much of their products recently. So if anybody has tried one out, know someone who has, or has a general opinion on it's quality or lack there of, please post it for me! Just want to see if this would be a quality firearm to add to the collection because I am craving a nice semi-auto 12 gauge defensive shotgun. I know I could spend the extra $500 and just get a Benelli, but from what I have seen lately, these VMTs seem to be all the rage on the 3G scene right now, so they can't be but so bad:cool: Anyways, let me know what ya'll think:D As usual, thanks for the expert and not-so-expert advice alike:thumbup:

An officer I work with has one and he really likes it. He's only had it a few months but has run a few hundred rounds of 00 and slugs thru it without any problems. I'm more of an ol' 870 guys myself ;)

Don't get me wrong, I am an 870 guy as well! Love them!! Just really want to fill the "tactical" semi-auto spot in the safe I have been craving for. Thanks man:)

Never had to work on a Versa Max but there's a lot more Winchester/Brownings/1187s/Benellis in my area

That being said, I work on a lot of Remignton 1100 and 1187 shotguns every year (probably just a statistics thing)

That also being said, in general Freedom Bastards (Group) generally = a$$holes

Never had to send a Versa Max back though (even if bought at another store)

For the price though, Benelli M2 tactical maybe? Used M4? I'm sure the Versa Max would be fine as well though

Havent handled one personally but I have a buddy who swears his is the best semiauto 12ga he has ever used. That means a lot to me considering he is in a line of work that grants him access to some really cool toys.

Well maybe that is a good thing:) Or like you said, just a statistics thing. It seems to me like the Versa Max has about as simple of a cycling mechanism as it gets so there can't be too much to worry about, reliability wise anyway. BUT.....it appears as though they simply stole this technology from Benelli in the first place, which isn't cool, but I guess that is the way the cookie crumbles:rolleyes: Thanks Mark, let me know if you ever do come across one or get the chance to try one out!

Wow. That pretty much seals the deal there:thumbup: I am hoping to get my hands on one here in the next month or so. Thanks Garth:D

I've got a Remington 1100 tactical and an 870. The 870 is a workhorse, has been through Hell and completely reliable through everything. I've shot the 1100 significantly less but have yet to have a single problem with it cycling everything from birdshot to slugs. My buddy had a Benelli m4. Droolworthy shotty for sure but significantly pickier with ammo. I've got a bit of a problem and may have to look into a Versamax

Be careful when venturing in the the AR world. It's like tinker toys for grown ups and before you know it you'll have 5.

Stay the H away from semis unless you're a nut about buying new ones every couple of years and/or cleaning and ensuring worn parts are up to spec. None of the dozens of hunting/shooting buddies of mine that bought into 1100s during the 1970s will trust them to function reliably anymore. Just when you count on a semi the most it'll be reliable the least. Remington 870s were slick design post war cheap/expedient pump shotguns and have withstood the test of time to the tune of millions made so far. Norinco (China) is even making them by the truckload now. If your left or right hand has any strength in it a pump gun will operate regardless of temperature/fouling/sand/swelled cartridges, bloopers and dirty chambers. This is infinitely valuable if your life depends on it.
The 870 Express budget models that have been marketed as of the past 25+ years are much rougher and weighty than the predecessor Wingmaster models which are also still available but custom at 2-3X the cost but it's well worth searching around to find a golden oldie version. 3 inch and 3 1/2 chamber guns is mostly a gimmick to sell new guns; a lead-filled 2 3/4 inch can stop any man.

They're fun, ok. I'm just one of those that goes on to say that if you're going to spend the money, get something nice... How much do we spend on knives? Then go buy a run of the mill gun...... I would say to go with a Benelli. I love the M3 Super 90. Plus, there aren't too many shotty's that can go semi, or pump, or... house 9 total internally with a 7 shell tube.

I havent had the chance to handle the versa max but another avenue fo consider would be a mossberg jm pro 22" or 24"... the 22" tubes 9 and the 24" tubes 10 (or so they boast anyway) they are considered prohib up here as we're only allowed to have 5 shots max in a semi auto. We could pin it like everything else...but wheres the fun in that?

Spyderwire, are you saying this because you only have experience with the Benelli? Or have you heard poor things about the Versa Max? I have heard that the technology between them is virtually identical and that it is really only a matter of manufacturing quality. Obviously Benelli wins there, but I would take my chances with 1/100 shotguns. Considering most of the VMT reviews have been positive on the build quality and reliability. Thanks for the input!

I have to ask, what specific role do you see this purchase filling?

'Defensive' use is a very broad term and to be quite honest the semi auto shotgun plays second fiddle to the semi auto rifle for most things in this category, excepting maybe holding a position like defending your bedroom.

IMO, shotguns are best suited to birds and have a rather small niche to fill tactically. If I was going to purchase a >$1,000 gun, I would define exactly what role it will be filling before considering what make/model is the most ideal.

So, after all this not answering your question I will say that I have little interest in buying anything with the name 'Remington' attached to it. The VMT could very well be a great gun, but I'd never take the thousand dollar plunge to find out for myself.

...I do believe that the 5 shot max in semi auto applies to magazines.... Not tube fed....worth checking out.

They have outlawed certain guns (and shotties) by make & model..... Reasons unknown.....

Limited role, yes. One of the best tools in close quarters.

I would seriously look at the Beretta 1301 Tactical over the VMT, Beretta owns Benelli (literally)……. :)

I'd also throw the FN SLP into the mix…..

I was waiting for someone to throw out the Remington hate, which I can't argue with, but I certainly take things on a gun-to-gun basis. Which in this case has been very positive with the VMT. Also, the VMT is clearly becoming more popular than the FN SLP in the 3G stage. Thanks for the input my friend:)
