I really like working with Tool, HC and spring steels. (D-2, A-2, 01, 5160) Not much of a fan of stainless steels however I do want some rust protection. I have been pointed to CPM as alternate but there are quite a few to choose from! I don’t want to spend more than $100 for a 36” bar stock. Can anyone suggest a good CPM steel with the similar properties as tool steels but not cost a fortune?

Thanks

Yes i buy my steel from him all time, What I was asking is what is better CPM S35VN ,CPM S30VN, CPM S3VN etc...? what the closest related to tool steels? thanks

I now use a lot of CPM- S35VN. It is fine grain, takes and holds a good edge, and comes in thin to medium thickness.

BTW, D-2 comes in CPM D-2

CPM is just Crucible Particle Metallurgy, and designates the steel as being composed of superfine particles that are fused to make the billet. This assures fine grain and even alloy distribution.

Aldo carries most of his more popular steels in PG or in regular mill surface.

Cpm 3v is the best all around steel ever it is also extremely strong one of the toughest knife steels out

CPM has nothing to do with rust prevention,as Stacy said it's just the process of making the steel.CPM D-2 or CPM 3V are great CPM tool steels.

Look at M390 or CPM S35VN for stainless steels. Personally, I think M390 is the best you can get but I don't know if you can get a 36" bar for $100.

I like cpm d-2 at rc-60 it's really a good choice but I find that when grinding it, it rusts faster than standard d2 although never had any rust problems out of either on a finished blade. Just when grinding it I'll dip it in my bucket to cool it off and it starts to rust rather quickly. I just ran out of my pile of d2 and cpm-d2 and now I'm going to try cpm154cm and s35vn.
