heyt does anyone have a portable minidisc player/recorder?

im looking one and accept any advice that you could inform me on

What would you like to know? I've owned several models of Minidisc's up to about a year ago, when I went full MP3.

how about, what ones did you have? what was the best one ( im not into spending a lot) and why doid you go full mp3?

I used a portable pretty regularly in high school. A friend and I used to trade mixes, because we were the only people we knew with MiniDisc players! :D Now I'm mostly mp3 too. I still have my MiniDisc player, and I still use it occasionally, but not as much as my CD player, tape deck, and computer.

Started out with a recorder/player about 8 years ago (don't remember the model) but found that it was a pain to record with that unit. I then picked up a MZ-EP11 and a MDS-JB920 deck unit to record CD's with. That was replaced with a MZ-E33. And my MDS-JB920 deck was replaced with a MD-PC1 for PC intergration.

I went with MP3's because I bought a Casio E-125 Pocket PC, and was able to read my e-news and listen to music at the same time. Music quality on the MD was far superior to the MP3's back then. But with the new MP3 recording quality, it was hard to distinquish between my MP3 and MD's, so the MD stays at home. I still have a MD deck in my car, but when I replace the car, I'm not planning to buy another unit.

I have a Sony minidisc recorder/player that I will sale. MZR50 I think. Very nice unit that I used to record one single MD. I simply do not have time to record music these days. If you are interested in purchasing it, drop me an email. Unit is like new in box!

Jay

Whoa, exact same story as mine! I don't listen to much music on the go anymore though, since it's rather a bit of a hassle to mess with headphone cords. I already listen to enough music at home (constantly on) so while outside I think deep thoughts.

Back to the whole MD/MP3 scenario, I'd say that all but the most die hard MD enthusiasts will see that MP3's are taking over. It's just too handy to be able to throw files onto pretty much any kind of media, and since many players have removable media, you can use them interchangeably with cameras/PDA's (if you buy an MP3 player using the same kind of media).

MD players are clumsy devices, with lots of moving parts. Drop the player a few times and you're going to have problems. My JVC player skipped a lot, though all of the Sony's that I've handled performed well. Beware the "Sony problem" though. In my experience, Sony's have an annoying tendency to die after a few years of use. I use my Sony MD deck as a computer speaker setup now. Tried to play some Mini-discs a few weeks ago, the MD part of the system just would not work. Sony's are trendy-looking but sometimes the internals are too fragile.

Don't know what else to recommend though, since I have no experience with other brands.

I'll admit that MD's are cool as all hell though. Think "Neo from The Matrix" cool. I enjoyed my MD players while I used them, if only to show backwards Americans what "hi-tech" is.

oh i see, well can anyone recommend a good yet not very expensive mp3 player????? one that can hold a fair amount of songs, maybe 5 hours of music

Easy fix. Never buy any Sony deck that starts with the number 3 or lower. Any unit that starts with the number 7 or 9 is built a bit studier. My MDS-JB920 still works fine. My MD-PC1 suffers the same condition as yours.h

Sorry this is a dumb question I know but I know nothing about mini disk players. My question is, is the Sony MZ-N1 Net MD Walkman a mini disk player? Or something else? It says it records MP3's and CD's will a mini disk do this? Sorry for going a little off topic! Heres a picture of it. Thanks!!!!!

Minidisc and MP3 are totally different. While they both record sounds, minidisc is a much clearer rip. Even when recording in LONG PLAY mode sound quality is far superior to MP3. The main reason I personally choose minidisc is the live recording capabilities. Many minidisc players have a mic input, whish is configired to record via microphone. plug a mic into a MP3 player and see what happens... Sure you may capture the moment, but its fuzzy and noisy. The media for mp3 players is expensive. MDLP minidiscs copy 5 hours of tunes on ONE DISC. Get a five pack and your set. I believe in mp3 world 124mb = something like 2 hours. not much anyway. The ipod seems like the creme of the crop so far.... STILL w/out CD quality sound.

I have the MZ-N707 and really like it. I have seen others and I honestly think that this is the BASE MODEL that should be considered. The plunge is more than I could actually afford, but I am REALLY glad I did.

ryan... SONY has created its very own version of MP3's, which is exactly the same, but only compatible with somy products. It is called "ATRAC" form. So, yes, it does mp3, and analog and digital via fiber optic input, which is what sold me in the first place.

There are two types of portable mp3 players. One uses memory chips to store the mp3 files. The largest capacity ones I've seen hold 128 MB, which can be 2-3 hours of music, depending on the resolution. The advantage of these is that they're tiny. My Intel Pocket Concert is about the size of a pager, and is great for short trips. I use MusicMatch Jukebox on my computer to copy mp3 files to the player, which can resample them at a lower rate, so that it holds more music.

The other type has a standard laptop hard drive in it, with capacities usually ranging from 5 to 40 gigabytes. I have a 20 GB NEO that holds hundreds of hours of music. These are substantially larger, about the size of a portable CD player, but a little thicker. You can also easily replace the hard drive in the NEO with a bigger one.

Both types of devices typically connect to a computer through the USB port. The NEO can also be used as a detachable hard drive, because you can store any type of files on it you want. The USB connection is relatively slow, by computer standards, so filling up the 20 GB drive takes quite a long time, but it holds so much music, you don't have to change it often. The Apple iPod player has a FireWire connection, which is much faster, but only connects to Mac computers. When shopping for a hard drive type player, look for one that doesn't require proprietary software to communicate with your computer.

Archieblue would you recommend the 707? i was looking at it,

does anyone have a protective case for their mds?
and how about remotes??????????????????????????????????????????????????

?

armlessbandit,

the portables usually come with a small case. I am not sure if there is much variation between cases on Sony´s, but the soft case that came with my MZ-R900 sure is sufficient for protection. I dropped the unit recently while running, it fell on asphalt and was dragged along for several yards, but there were no scratches, and the playback did not even skip.

Remotes are extremely important in my opinion, I would not buy a portable without one. Without a remote one would have to use the unit without any protection and at a very accessible place (and I think most units only have a belt clip on the case, not the unit itself), or one has to spend ages fumbling in the pocket just to change the volume.

I think Sony is about to release their newest generation of players anytime now (the MZ-N10 and MZ-E10), so you might want to wait, either to get one of those or to buy one of the older units once their prices have dropped.

Greyarea

thank you so much, that was VERY informative and i was thinking of purchasing one soon, so now my purchase will be prolonged, how long do you think it will be until the new ones will be released"?????????
