need a minidisc

armlessbandit,

according to this site: http://www.japan-direct.com/cartitem.asp?prodid=380
the MZ-N10 is already available in Japan and can be ordered from there. The release dates in other countries can be quite a bit later, based on my experiences here in Germany I would not expect it before March.

One could of course get it from Japan, but right now it is a bit pricey for my taste, especially with shipping. And then there are the problems with the recharging equipment working on Japanese voltage, no English manual and the risk that local Sony centres might not be able or willing to help with an imported unit if something is wrong.

Here in Germany Sony apparently is already trying to get rid of their MZ-N1´s, anyone buying one now will get a pair of aluminum speakers for free which usually retail for the same price as the MD-player. Since the new N10 does not appear to have any major advantages over the N1 but instead supposedly has an inbuilt (not user-replaceable) rechargeable battery (something I do not like at all) I am very tempted at getting the N1 right now. Maybe Sony is doing similar campaigns in your area?

well guys i have taken your advice, im waiting on the purchase, because of the newer models being released, if the prices drop i will probasbly buy the md707 by sony but you never know what they are comin out with next. I would like to thank everyone for their input, it has done a great deal of good

I'm using a professional model from HHB (Portadisc) that has balanced inputs and a USB port so I can go right out to the DAW and sweeten things/whatever. The HHB is a very robust unit. I have used it outdoors in storms, high humidity, freezing cold, etc., and it has never failed. It us used extensively for ENG and quite a bit for remote recording of everything from bird calls to effects.

Right now, I am using it to do family history interviews that I can index easily, take to CD and distribute to family members.

With a nice single-point stero mic (AT 825) or some Core Binaural condenser mics, I can make very nice recordings of live music. The Cores are superb.

The HHB wasn't cheap, but it is a great unit, built like a tank.

If you're looking for something really useful, look at the new Marantz professional unit that records directly to CD. It also has balanced inputs, USB, etc. Look for the Marantz CDR-300. It is around $700...but it looks so nice. I wonder why something like this took so long.

The little Sonys are pretty nice too. I bought a 707 so my folks could interview some 90-year-old relatives out west.

Good luck,

Mike

mjb, thank you, how is thwe 707? its the one i was gearing towards,,,,, can it record people from a microphone? i didnt know that

Yep, small stereo or mono condenser mics on a 1/8 mono or stereo plug will work OK. For interviewing, I use small condenser stereo mics with one clipped on interviewer and one on interviewee...seems to work real nice and gives nice imaging.

Good luck.

Mike
