Need a new all-purpose fixed blade for my BOB/Get Home Kit

Have you considered the Benchmade 375 Adamas? Nice big hunk of D2. A good paracord wrap might be in order but hey, every survival scenario needs paracord!

Yes, I did actually consider it. It seems like a nice knife but I ruled it out for this purpose for 2 reasons... 1. D2 will be pretty hard to resharpen in the field if it is an extended "bug out". 2. I wanted a little longer blade.

Well, now I'm REALLY confused. I just managed to sell my OKC 3S bayonet that was sitting in the safe collecting dust so now I COULD expand my budget. Part of me wants to just buy another Fallkniven S1 or maybe go a little bigger and get the A1. Part of me thinks it is crazy to have a $150 - 180 knife just sitting in a BOB. Maybe I'll split the difference and upgrade from the BK7 to the ESEE-6. Arrrrgggg!

No need to upgrade to the ESEE. The BK7 is more than enough knife and to be honest the only difference between the two knives is the price. Save the money and get the Becker, as nice as the ESEEs are.

Why do you need to buy another knife? Can't you just store the S1 in the kit and take it out whenever you go hunting? If you must have a knife that just sits in a kit for years on end make it something like a Mora.

Just a quick update. On Friday, I finally pulled the trigger on bought a Becker BK7. I'm going to withhold a decision on the sheath until I see it in person, but I'm likely going to add a kydex sheath in the near future. Thanks for all the advice.

The ESEE 6 is mighty comfy in hand. Good balance, the coating is tough, and it holds an edge well. Just my 2 cents

I see I'm too late but I will post my thought on this subject in case others are reading.

The knife I prefer for this purpose is the old Ontario Pilot Survival knife. It's 5" blade will do most knife stuff but the blade also includes a saw back that can actually cut metal and since I live in an urban setting I like the idea of having some way of cutting light metal and other tough man made objects. Also the hex bolt butt cap can break glass and generally pound on stuff. Since they can be had for $40, it's easy to have multiples. I really think this is a great knife for the urban/suburban environment as it's original design is to first be able to deal with man made materials then after escaping that mess be capable in a wilderness setting. 1095 is easy to sharpen and they are usually on the soft side so while edge holding is not super they are less likely to suffer catastrophic breakage.
Ontario has been making this knife for the military for so long they are absolutely reliable in every way and the odds of running into a heat treat problem or other defect is almost zero.

My preference for the BOB would be, in this order, a Swamp Rat or Scrapyard (whichever size suits you), the ESEE 6 and lastly the BK7. The ESEE is convenient since it comes with a quality sheath, with the Bussekin knives you can get a custom sheath and you will probably want to do the same with the Becker. If you want to leave the knife in the car and not worry about maintenance then it might be worth staying with the Fallkniven since it is stainless.

Edit: Just noticed the post saying you had already gone with the Becker. Well I am sure you will not be disappointed with the knife, also if it is just sitting in your car then I don't really see the need to upgrade the sheath anyway.
