Need a new beater for work. Anything better than rat-2?

I wish there was a Rat 1.5. The Rat 2 is a wee, spindly knife for small hands (my wife's favorite knife), and the Rat 1 is a chunk. Just a tooch too large for most to want to carry it.

The Rat 2 is barely big enough to be functional to me, but I have Sasquatch hands.

Kershaw Clash is in the same size range and has great ergos. Better IMO than the Rat 2. Blade steel leaves much to be desired though.

Check out the RealSteel H6-S1; almost exactly between a RAT Model 1 and Model 2 with better materials and F/F.

Although I wouldn't say it's been beat to hell, my Buck Vantage Select (large) gets a lot of hard use and has held up well. Lockup is still solid, blade flips smoothly, and the only real sign of use is scratches on the blade. You get a lot for the money.
Hmm seems like you were lucky. Alot of people and including me, had theirs gritty and rough, mediocre flipping action, crappy 100% late lockup with lock rock, and horrible centering

Cold steel, take your pick but my choice is the hold out II. Only folder I have doubles of still.

Good suggestion Steve! I completely forgot about cold steel's offerings.

In that size range, the Recon 1 mini would be absolutely perfect.

Here it is without that sorry excuse for a blade coating (might as well be latex house paint):

I don't know about better , but I have edc'd a Rat 1 for a few years but am now awaiting shipment on a Spyderco Tenacious that I'm going to give a go. I had a Persistance that I gave my son as it was a little to small for me even though it worked well, so the Tenacious might be the ticket. Similar size to the R1 , flat ground blade and liner lock ; maybe the "feel" of it I may like better.

I don't like to use $100 + folders at work , but that's just me.

ESEE Avispa is not a bad choice. Very much like a Rat 1, but thinner and a frame-lock. I've been carrying one for the last month or so to cut up cardboard and such at work and am pretty impressed with it so far.

Thanks everyone for the great response. There are a lot of really good choices here but I posted this same tread on another forum as well and a awesome member sent me a Benchmade Mini-grip! Should be here any day and I cant wait. I will post some pics when it arrives. Thanks again everyone!

Yup, that aus8 CS coating is laughable, falls off cuttin butta.:p

I had a Xhp talwar I stabbed into a hallow core door about 20 times, and ZERO, I MEAN ZERO of the coating came off. Shocked to say the least. Night and day difference between the coatings. Almost backwash type durability, not really obviously but couldnt believe it. Miss both versions I had of that including a satin xhp one.

I'm not a fan of lockbacks either, but the delica 4 is amazing. It's easy to open one handed, and to close. I was worried I wouldn't like the frn but I think it's great. Super light weight and very ergonomic.
