hey bladeforums,
i was wondering if you guys could recoment me a good fixed or folding knife with a blade between 4 and 5 inches long. i need it to be as strong as possible because it will be my main camping and military knife. also it needs to be under or at 70$, thanks.

i was looking at it and i have heard great things, but i would also like it to be as light as possible. will definatly look into it more

FFG Endura. I have one specifically for camping and it's great. Perfect blade length, good steel (stainless), lightweight, & very high-quality. Spyderco's aren't generally my thing but this knife is fantastic.

Aside from the Becker, which, in your price range would be the best choice, maybe something from Ontario, Kabar or even Gerber. Ontario makes a USAF Pilot Survival knife that might work, or, one of several pieces from their Spec Plus line. Gerber also offers a piece called the Big Rock Camp knife that I hear is reasonably well made. Just a few dollars more, however, would put you into a whole different league with the likes of ESEE, (Formerly RAT Cutlery), or one of several other good companies.

i trust spyderco and already have the mil, but would you say the endura is stronger, and how heavy would you say the bk2 is?

You can get the Buck Vanguard for under $60. 4-inch 420HC blade, either with wood or black rubberized handle. Nice size for camping or anything else.

the vanguard looks pretty but i have nevery been satisfied with my last 2 bucks. I have decided to go with the becker, unless i can find something lighter. thanks.

I wouldn't go a folding route for a main hunting / outdoors knife, though the Endura is a nice knife and would do great as backup.

I would recommend a ESSE-4.

Actually, I carry my RAT/ESEE-6 for that :D, but the Endura serves me well for chores around the tent. The Becker BK2 that the OP chose is a worthy knife as well.

I caught myself typing "RC-4" before I corrected myself. :D

I love Spyderco and the FFG endura but I would rather have the Sabre ground blade for a "beater" the FFG endura's blade is very thin.

I would go BK2 for sure. It is the picture in the dictionary next to "beater" :D

5.11 First Responder, s30v blade, and built like a tank.

If you shop around you can get a Spyderco Manix 2 for around the $70 range. The Kershaw Lahar would also be one to look at. Good Luck. Kevin

A great, and highly undermentioned, folder is the CRKT Lake Thunderbolt. Solid as they come, decent looking, and, best of all, thy can be had for around $30! I have ont that a pull out for my (I don't wanna hurt my nice knife) tasks. The blade is scratched all to heck, but it holds an edge well, and is really easily sharpened. It has the Lawks feature (I sometimes use whent really torqueing on te blade, but usually not), so it locks vrey securely. Best of all, you could pick up a decent workhorse fixed blade to go with it for the $40-50 left over. (Buck 119 or Gerber Profile or Big Rock are a few or my suggestions).

Keep it simple on the brands so you don't feel bad if you lose it. That's my .02

the bk2 is pretty heavy (but a great knife and fits your $70 budget), for $20 more over your budget I would look at the RC-4 also

The Becker BK-2 is definitely strong, but the weight and thickness (1/4") doesn't really suit me. Even though it is 2" longer the BK-7 weighs slightly less and (to me) and the thinner blade (.188) feels easier to manage. The BK-2 sheath is definitely better than the BK-7.
