I am in need of a new day hiking pack. What would you reccomend? What have you found works for you. I usually carry everything for my wife and myself. I have been using an Eagle Creek pack for the last couple of years, but if finally gave up the ghost. Thanks for your help.

I really like the Under Armour backpacks. I have one for school and another for hunting. They are well designed and well put together IMHO. Good luck with your search. -DT

Lowe Alpine and Osprey or what I normally grab when I hit the trail or just for carrying misc junk to work.

Osprey is priced well. Also, you should check out the Kelty Military line. very attractive colours there and not priced like Kifarus, lol....

I use a Camelbak Honcho for day hiking and day skiing excursions. The compression/shovel flap really comes in handy. The Honcho fits me well, and offers plenty of support for a load.

I use an REI Jet Pack for commuting to and from work. It handles two Nalgene bottles, food for the day, a first aid kit, and a small compliment of just-in-case stuff. It is a simple and light pack, and doesn't offer a ton of support for the load.

If this will be a serious day pack for day hikes, make sure you get something that fits you well. I've seen folks who buy packs based on looks or features, and then suffer when they need to carry a full day hike load. I'll admit I did that once, but never will again.

Maxpedition or Kifaru are well worth a look, between them they have all/most bases covered id say. but it depends on what you like and your budget ?
The set up used by "SpookyPistolero" in the link provided by "Mrpink" looks quite usefull, but maybe a bit small for you and your wifes stuff ?

Thanks for all the help guys. I will let you all know what I end up with. My wife and I are getting in shape for a trip to Zion National Park in June.

I usually use a ll bean stowaway day pack. Its only 25 dollars its decent quality and It is wicked light 16ounces I think. It is still pretty durable.

My vote is for a Maxpedition. Well made reasonable price. I have a Condor II and it is the right size for a day pack. Lots of attachment points to use for knives, axe, machete or molle type pouches. Kirafu are awfully expensive, by the time you add on options you have a $250 day pack.

I bought REI's Jet Pack after being so happy with their Flash daypack. I have four different Osprey daypacks for hauling dense loads, but for typical hikes, the Jet Pack has become my favorite. It doesn't offer much support, but to remedy this I cut a cheap closed cell foam pad to line the inside of the pack. Stuffed full, the pack now has plenty of support. I can also use it as a short torso pad, that when combined with the pack itself, offers minimal insulation from the ground should I need to spend an unexpected night in the woods.

Oakley makes some excellent pack. I carry one daily and have for a couple of years very comfortable and well made.

Eagle Industries A-III

Perfection!

large a.l.i.c.e. w/frame! you can fit the kitchen sink! heavy duty and will last a lifetime! also very affordable!

I have some maxpedition packs, and they are really good, with the modular features are also versatile.
But ergonomics are not their strong point. While it isn't quite as important for a day bag, ergonomic design can make or break a pack when you have lots of weight or are using it for days on end.
For an ergonomically designed pack, I've been checking out Granite Gear. While I don't own any yet, my friend does, and that is the best expedition bag I've ever seen. He also has a day pack and it is super nice. Extremely comfortable.
I like my maxpedition pygmy falcon 2, proteus, and condor 2 packs. But I think I'd like to get into the granite gear stuff when I have more cash on hand. It's the best stuff I've seen.
