Need a new folder...

As much as I'm not a big Spyderco fan I do have to say for cutting boxes they are outstanding. With a Police model that I had for awhile I didn't just open a box, I would cut the ends completely off (until I accidentally cut the end of a box off that was in the box that I was opening). And if you really look at a bunch of websites you can find some pretty great deals on Spydies, especially the newer ones with VG10 steel. The VG10 really holds an edge. This is really a pretty good recommendation coming from someone who is a Microtech, Dalton and Sebenza junkie (and a recent DDR convert).

I've also owned the Gerber Applegate Fairbairn series of folders. The combat although a good sturdy knife is probably too large for what you're looking for and the Covert I just wasn't too impressed with. For the money ($70-$80) you can get better.

Vector, If you want something to hold an edge for a real long time, I'd put 154CM pretty low on the totem pole. CPM440V, VG-10, S30V, etc. should hold edges for quite a while, as well as Benchmade's M2 and D2.
154CM holds a good edge for a while, but under my relatively soft use I tend to become dissatisfied with a 154CM/ATS-34 edge withing a couple months.

Learn to sharpen, it'll save you lots of time and money, $50 for a Spyderco 204 Sharpmaker will easily pay for itself after you've shipped your knife back and forth to the factory time and time again.

speaking of CPM440V and great factory service, check out the Kershaw Avalanche, Random Task, Ricochet, and Boa.

M2 Is available on the BM 140 Nimravus, 145 Nimravus Cub, 710 McHenry & Williams, 804 AFCK-II, and 910 Stryker
D2 Is available on the BM 806D2 AXIS AFCK and 46-01 Spear-Point Bali-Song
S30V Is available on the bran-spanking new 921 Double Vision/Switchback

M2 Steel was also available on the Special Run Carbon-Fiber scaled BM 735 Ares (The Normal Production model sports only 154CM, however.)

Hope this helps.

P.S. Learn to sharpen and get the knives you want!

Hmm... thanks...

Say, what's the difference between the 710 and the 720 series? I'm looking at pictures and reading descriptions, but they seem pretty much the same thing. Is there something under the hood?

If all you're reading is the description than yeah they should seem similar.

But look at them and the differences are many and noticeable:

Benchmade 710

Benchmade 720

Notice the wider, flared handle of the 720, the upswet recurveless bowie blade, and the fact that the blade is 0.75" Shorter.
While the 710 sports a sleek, flowing handle, a straighter but recurved clip point, and the fact the blade is a full 4".
Also the 720 has 6061-T6 Aluminum Alloy Handles while the 710 Has G10 Handles, however, the 721 (with the same styling as the 720) has G10 handles aswell.
Big differences.

P.S. note the pics are not to scale.

Marry me?

You guys are really great. Huge thanks to all - I think I'll be going with the 710 :)

Again, my appreciations. This is a great place.

:)

No prob, Brandon. We Try.

710 is a very nice choice, my friend has one and likes it alot, I like it also, but not quite as much as my BM 805 TSEK AXIS (God the Ergonomics rock on this thing! :)) Anywho, enjoy your 710.

Do be SURE to get a Satin Blade (as opposed to BT2).

I know nada about the higher end coatings, but DETEST BT2.

All I know is I don't cut much cardboard (but lots of hose and stuff) and a Kershaw VaporII and a set of ceramic Crock Stix is all I really need in a knife, and at no more than $40 for the whole sheebang!

I just about WOULD NOT spend $100 plus on a working knife.

I am a CHEAP Bastid!!!
