Need a new folder

Forget recurved folders, they are hard to sharpen. Look at a T2 Harsey Ranger by Lone Wolf. then spend the rest on ammo or beer.

I'll have to respectfully disagree with you on that one, I've kept mine a razor with the Spyderco Sharpmaker, just using the edges instead of the flats with great results. I've found it an easy blade to keep a good working edge on. YMMV.

Another vote here for the Spydies

I EDC a Para Mil in D2, or Manix 2 in S30V

Funny -- one of the reasons I like it is because of the graphic -- and I'm old. I pre-ordered mine here

Good, I hope you enjoy it, I don't see any reason why you shouldn't. It's too much fluff for me.

I've been blabbing about Cold Steel in other threads, so I'll blab about them here too :). At 1/4 the price of stylish folders with titanium and tiger stripes (which I do own and am not dissing, btw), I don't think the Lawman or Recon 1 can be beat. They get more pocket time than my SNG, ZT0300 and other heavy honeys combined.

CS Lawman.

For around $250 you can find a used but in very good condition (near mint) small Sebenza. Chris Reeve folders are some of the best engineered knives that I have seen. If you want something larger than the 3" small, you will have to spend a few more dollars for a used Umnumzaan or Large Sebenza (the Umnum is amazing btw).

I agree. I have pre-ordered one of the new folders. They are going to be made of D2 and the selling price is $175.00. They look like a lot of knife for the money.

 Can you explain wtf that means? :D

yes, i have a 301 (stripe blade)with the black carbon fiber slab. i have also switched the slabs on a 300 (black blade) to the coyote tan. you can mix and match differnt slabs with blades. i'm still trying to find a multicam slab to put on mine now. there are so many differnt combo's. tadgear had a few exclusive knives that were pretty nice looking. some even had a differnt grind on the blades. i hope this helps.

I would recommend pre-ordering one of the Hest/F folders. Check them out at www.dpxgear.com, I think the retailer price is around 180.00 and they will be available some time around the end of the year.

Good luck with your search.[/QUOTE

Sweet folder, I might just have to get one of these.

If I could do it all over again and reestablish my folder collection from scratch:
(In no particular order)

1. Cold Steel American Lawman (new style with 100% G-10 handle)

2a. Spyderco Military
or
2.b Spyderco Paramilitary 2

3. Benchmade large Bone Collector folder (i'd regrind the tip to make it more of a sheepsfoot)

I'd be happy with that exact mix.

I would have to second the ZT 0300 series, I loved my Benchmade Rukus 615 until I got the 0301, it is a beast of a knife that could do about anything a fixed blade could, although if you really want a folding machete, get the Cold steel Rajah.. they don't make the fancy rajah 1 anymore but the rajah II is a lot cheaper for the same blade.
Can't go wrong with Zero Tolerance folders. I had a chris reeve sebenza, and sold it after I got my ZT.. the 0350 is a nice size too if you don't like the larger 0300 series

I'm looking at folders as well. A lot of great recommendations above. The manix has great steel--the CTS-XHP which holds a great edge, but beware--it has not performed outstandingly in hard use tests (but is that really a concern for you, looking for an edc knife?). I don't like the recurve either, so the ZTs other than the new one are out for me. I'm still looking into the ZT 0551. But a lot of people love the ZTs and they look to be great knives.

The Hest really has my attention, but my first impression is that this is basically designed to be an ESEE type of knife that folds. I mean look at the blade thickness! It is as thick as a hard use fixed blade. The reason I am eyeing it would be for situations where I am hiking or something but still in an area where I don't want to take a fixed blade (in california, there are a lot of areas that are remote and rugged yet also a place where I'd be afraid about getting in trouble with the law). Just know that it looks like a pretty beefy knife to carry around. But if that is the sort of knife you are after, there are few real competitors. There is a cold steel model that gets a lot of hard use rec's, but I think it is AUS8A. I'd go with the hest's D-2.

For me, I'm probably going to get a spyderco para-military (either the original or the new 2). I will regard it as accenting my thick fixed blade (for situations where I want a smaller more workable blade). But if I wanted something to supplant the thick fixed blade (the situation mentioend above is the only one I can think of), I would go with the hest. Another model I am considering is the spyderco carbon fiber stretch in ZDP-189 since that steel really holds an edge well, but it is also a bear to re-sharpen, so probably leaning towards the para-military.
