Need a New Hatchet for the Woods

i never had a gerber and wasn't aware the gators were taiwanese. still, the wetterlings can be had for $25, give or take $5, so i don't think the investment is too great for something you're worried you may ruin, which probably won't happen anyway.

Magnum, the guy up the road from me bought the package after I showed him it whenever it went up in that other thread. He won't let me go all Animal Style with it but it feels just awesome in the hand.

I have a GB mini and it's just astounding how efficient that little guy is at chopping wood! But I definitely wouldn't want to use it for anything else. It's a fine woodworking tool & should be reserved for clean wood, i.e. I would feel nervous going after roots in the dirt. I got mine used here for maybe 2/3 the new price.

This is where my next 65 bucks is going, I love this combo. The hatchet is ridiculously well balanced in hand and the Mora, well...

Ordered the set today. Looks like a really nice set. The ax is one of the last things needed to get back into camping (after 40 years) and the knife will be added to the collection. Think the highest I made it was Star or Life Scout. No way to remember for sure.

Well if you ever wanna trade the Mora let me know...please post a review of the combo once you get to beat them up a little. :D

Oh yeah, and dont get me wrong, I have a gerber gator axe, and a wetterlings and like both. I just didnt know if you knew :)

Thanks much for all the replies thus far, folks! I had planned on picking up the Fiskars today from Meijer, just because I had a lamp to return worth about the price of one. Low and behold their return policy sucks, so I didn't have that 'free money' to buy it with.

I had previously been leaning towards the Wetterlings, just because of the praise they recieve here and because I like the blade style. I'm thinking that I should probably go ahead and start with one of them anyway, since this is something of a 'test period' for deciding if I wan't to keep a hatchet in the pack or not and I want a quality example.

Length is proving to be the next big question mark. I really wanted the shorter of the models, as I enjoy having less bulk to carry around. It will also fit in a smaller pack if I want, or even on the hip. A larger small axe won't do this. But the larger (as in 17-19") has such a nice chopping advantage. I don't feel, however, that I do enough heavy chopping to merit the extra power. If I needed lumber of that sort, my folding saw would probably be coming out. I feel like the difference is accepting that this isn't full wilderness living, but simple backpacking/adventuring, so the very best tool for the job can't always be around. You just can't put a whole tool box in your pack.

More contemplating for me...

I dont find My 19" wetterlings to be a burden, It actually seems to not be that long, I find its worth the extra few inchs, but YMMV.

I love both gerber and fiscars Hatchets they chop really well and have enogh thickness to split well too. their handles dont break. You could probably reprofile the edge to cut better but they are really good for the price.
