I am looking to buy a new knife for about $90-100 it could be less just looking for some recommendations have been looking at some spydercos and some crkt's but would like to know what you guys think any help would be much appreciated thanks Mike

Well Mike...Not knowing what you plan to do with it or if you're looking for fixed or folder, I'll offer the following - based entirely on my own experience and opinion. This is by no means an exhaustive list.

Folders:Spyderco Sage (Carbon Fiber) or Benchmade Mini Grip

Fixed: ESEE Izula, ESEE 3, Spyderco Moran or a used Fallkniven or BRKT (from the exchange)

well it will primarily be my edc and it has to be a folder and have a good blade steel and i really dont care for the benchmade axis lock and so benchmade is out the window

All steel Spyderco Rookie or Delica (top two in the photo)?

P.S. I would have PM'd you, but you're not set up for that.

Since you are already considering Spyderco, you can't go wrong with a vg-10 or zdp-189Delica, Stretch, or Endura.

yea the only thing is i believe in Illinois where i live that you can only carry a blade length of up to 3 inches but i am not 100% sure on this because the laws are written so confusingly that almost no one can understand i have looked it up but i don't understand it

^don't quote that or click it, as it's spam. I've already reported it.

haromj15, there are so many knives around $100 that you will have to describe what you like in a knife or what you plan to do with it in order for anyone to make any meaningful suggestion :)

ok thanks well i am really looking for a good edc knife one that has a good blade steel that can hold an edge good not to heavy but weight is not a huge issue to me as long as its not like 7 oz or something like that preferably with a g10 handle but that could change but from the knives i have owned i seem to prefer the g10 over other handle material as previously stated i do not like the axis lock so preferably a liner-lock/ frame-lock or lock-back other then that i am not 100% sure on

I've been through a few EDC's, and have pretty much settled in with the Spyderco Endura with the wave in plain edge. It just seems to work for me, and I like the built in bottle opener.

Buck Vantage Pro
G10, linerlock, S30V blade and less than your budget. Its a fine knife. I think the blade is 3.25 but they do have a sub-three inch version.

Another favorite of mine that seem to meet your criteria are the Spyderco Sage. And don't shy away from Kershaw...they have very high quality knives and they sell at attractive costs too (and American made which is a plus for me).

yea i have been looking at the sage 1 i like the feel of it i have handled it before very comfortable in hand and also have been looking at some kershaws because for the price you cant beat them

have you looked at the Kershaw Rake?
just over 3" blade of CPMD2, liner lock, 3 position clip, flipper, and assisted open.
(I'm generally not an A/O fan, but I like this one)

Off subject but I've been wondering for a while now why bottle openers are on almost all multi-tools.

My question is "when do you need a bottle opener?" I haven't seen a bottle without a screw top in years except wine with a cork.

Just curious.

then you're not drinking the right beer.

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: what he said!

Truth be told, I live in Illinois and I've carried everything. Back a few years ago I worked for a cop and asked him this numerous times. His take was this: if you carry a knife with a 5 inch blade, are in good standing with the law, and arent stupid about it, dont worry about it. If you carry a 2 inch blade that is plainly the type of blade that will hurt somebody and you arent in good standing you'll have problems. I carry a ZT0301, a Brian Tighe Nirk Tighe, a BM mini grip or BM 940 osborne if I'm going to be in chicago and I wont need a big knife or dont want the added attention, a Camillus TL-29 is always with me too. Just go find something you like. and if its 3.25 or 4 inches and you dont plan on being arrested for something where that would just add to the charges dont worry about it. But, because of our laws around here, its difficult to find a place where you can pick up and try out different knives until you find one that fits good for you. If you have other questions about knives in illinois, where to get them, where to get good ones etc email me as I cant PM at ryanmyrda at ameritech dot net

Generally good advice in any state, Tactical. For the OP, here's the Illinois statute:

Illinois Criminal Code 720 ILCS 5/24-1. Unlawful Use of
Weapons
. (a) A person commits the offense of unlawful use
of weapons when he knowingly... (2) Carries or possesses
with intent to use the same unlawfully against another, a
dagger, dirk, billy, dangerous knife, razor, stiletto,
broken bottle or other piece of glass... or any other
dangerous or deadly weapon of like character...

- 720 ILCS 5/33A-1... A person is considered Armed with a
Dangerous Weapon
... when he carries on or about his person
or is otherwise armed with a category I or category II
weapon. (b) A category I weapon is a [firearm or] a knife
with a blade at least 3 inches in length
, dagger, dirk,
switchblade knife, stiletto, or any other deadly or
dangerous weapon of like character.

(Emphasis added.)

So, basically, under 3" and you are legal unless you intend to use it illegally against another person (e.g. assault, murder, robbery, rape, mayhem, etc.). Over 3" and you're technically illegal without any such maliciuous intent.

When carrying a blade of any length, just behave yourself. :)

The above information is being posted for general discussion and educational purposes only and should not be construed as legal advice.
You should always consult with your own lawyer about your specific situation.

yea thanks for all that help and yea that is the only problem there is no knife stores in illinois the only one that i know of is all the way down in southern illinois and i live in the south burbs and it is hard to test out knives before i buy them

I don't have much use for knives with blade lengths of 3-inches or less. Still, there are many 3-inchers out there that are worthwhile. My favorite is a Spyderco Native. They may or may not be available (used to be sold at Wal*Mart). It has an S30V blade and fits the hand quite well.

CRKT has a nice little knife with a titanium handle. Can't recall what the model is, but I think it's an M16-01T. I also have an 8011 Viele/Wasp, also made by CRKT.

Finally, I love the Cold Steel Voyager 3-inch. You have to hold it to appreciate it. And the polished blade can get wickedly sharp.

There are all sorts of great knives around, so almost any good brand will do. But I couldn't live with a 3-incher. I'd need at least a 4-. The state law about being armed and dangerous with a 3 1/2-inch blade is ridiculous -- but the law is the law.
