Hi guys,

I need a new wilderness knife and have narrowed the choices down to the Becker Crewman (BK10) and the Cold Steel SRK. What do you suggest, and why?

Also please don't recommend other knives as I'm choosing from just these two.

Cheers,

J.

I've been thinkin about a crewman myself...coldsteel seems to be hit or miss for me. bot seem a little large too me. but i'd probably go crewman

If your serious about this..buy a BUSSE. Proven in the field, easy to resharpen, and won't let you down when you need it most.

I don't think you will go far wrong with either but whichever you want get it quick as both are now out of production and getting hard to find !!!

Becker prices are rising with the closing of Camillus. You can find both but I think the SRK prices are not inflated.

You can still find the BK2 Campanion. It's thicker than the crewman but is in the blade length and prices are not too bad yet.

If I had to find one now, I'd probably co with the SRK only because of availability.

Crap, did Camillus close? Maybe I should get a Brute while I still can find them.

Thanks guys.

I have access to both of them and, like all knives in Australia, neither of them are particularly cheap.

Also please don't recommend other knives as I'm choosing from just these two.

If your serious about this..buy a BUSSE.

Wasp, they not teaching English comprehension in Ohio these days? ;)

I got a SRK and I am very pleased with it. I take it along on all of my hiking trips.

I mainly use it for fire making, cooking and general utility.

You will not regret buying a SRK, not for that price anyway

The SRK I think does feel better in my hand than the beckers, so I would pick up the SRK. Now to a ? for you do you have a s-1 knife and do you like it.
I thought in another post you said you had one.
Take care,
Bryan

Have you guys done any type of modding to the srk, arnt they a little "shy" on the cutting side?

Both seem great and as long as you don't plan to chop concrete like Noss here on the forums either one should work quite nicely.

FWIW, I reguard my Becker Necker highly. Albeit, I did put a slightly too thin edge on it that likes to deform with any type of impact, but it cuts great!

Don't know anything about the Becker, but the SRK seems to be a pretty nice compromise knife. Built fairly tough, not too big, not too small...

I just had an order from Navy SOCOM. They wanted as many SRK's as they could get. I guess they like 'em.

Go with the SRK. Get one in carbon V quick as they are disappearing quickly in this steel. The new ones are in a japanese stainless. The carbon V's are better IMHO. Has to do with the closing of Camillus - they really knew how to heat treat steel there - oh well another american cutlery co closed. Mismanagement and imports to blame.
