Need a new wilderness knife

I for one am going to change things abit, A Grohmann #4, in stainless or carbon, I prefer stainless, but its a great, tuff knife. Plus with the mil spec version sheath, no worries about cutting it when returning it to the sheath.

Camillus has closed down.
Cold Steal SRK is not really reliable.
Get a Fallkniven A2 and a F1.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the responses - based on the almost unanimously good reports from field users, I've decided to go with the SRK.

Bryan - yeh, I've got an S1 and love it, but I wanted a fixed blade in carbon steel. Both the Crewman and the SRK are available at a reasonable price, so they're what I fixed on.

Another vote for the SRK in carbon steel

I like the rubber handle. I've thrown mine hundreds of times - it is a tough knife - and it is pretty light for it's size too.

If your serious about this..buy a BUSSE. Proven in the field, easy to resharpen, and won't let you down when you need it most.

Both the Becker and the SRK are also proven in the field ;)

I have a couple of crewman and they make a great woods knife in my opinion. Good for chopping but not so great for thin slicing, as in you won't be dicing up onions in camp to easy with one.

The SRK is a nice light knife but it lacks as a chopper. It will do better with the smaller tasks that the Becker is overbuilt for.

I have batoned wood with both and the Crewman wins for that task as well.

If you can wait a couple weeks until I get back from Greece I can mail you out a crewman to borrow before you make a purchase. That way you will know if you like it or not.

Thanks for the offer mate, but I live in Australia so its not going to be practical to send a knife all the way out here. I'm gonna go the SRK, and if I really dont like it (which I think is very unlikely) then I might just get a Crewman as well. We'll have to see. I appreciate your offer though.

Are those SRK's still availible in Carbon V new? I know Camillus went under, but I have no idea how much backstock is available.

what a nice offer by the_gimp! well jh205, i know you've decided on the SRK. i don't think you could go wrong on either choice. let us know how you like it.

Anytime. :)

Well, mainly because I've never owned a carbon steel knife, and I'd like to see how they compare to my stainless knives.

I have a feeling that it does not really matter what knife you bring, as long as you feel comfortable with it. Go to a knife store and "feel" the knives. Look at those suggested here, Becker, Fallkniven, (SRK) and others and place them side by side and feel the handles and how they balance. Then pick the one that feels best.
It also depends what you are using the knife for too.
Good luck and enjoy your trip.

i have beckers and i have srks, they are both great knives, youwont go wrong with either of them, the becker line is getting hard to find, but reports are that ethan becker is getting a new manufacturer to pick up the line.

I own plenty of expensive knives (e.g., Randall, Strider), but I have NO problem carrying an SRK as my primary knife in the Wilderness. In fact, I have two. It works and you don't feel bad beating on it, if necessary. Get one in CarbonV if you can find it. Even if you get a more expensive knife later you won't feel bad about having the SRK to leave in your trunk or BOB.
