hello,

my father's homemade knife (he ground it from a Nicole's file was damaged by a house fire. it was very likely the temper was destroyed I think and I want to redo it for him. anyone interested in taking it on?

it's not a fancy knife but it's been his favorite for 40 years.

Hello Dozer,

Do you have a photo of said knife, and have you file checked the knife to see how soft it may have become? Obviously this is a unique situation because the house fire could of ruined the metalurgy. This all depends on how lucky the blade was during the fire.

The file test would merely let you know how bad the heat treat was ruined. If the heat treats completely gone then the steel could've been over heated in the fire. Just one of those variables a house fire can add to jobs like this. Hopefully the steels in serviceable condition and can be heat treated again. If it's not you could still always get the knife dressed up looking nice to still pass it down the family. Goodluck!
