I'm looking for a good Day pack. I have a M-alice but to me thats still a little large for a hike in the woods, I also have a cheap fanny-pack(WALLY-World)
but when its full, it's uncomfortable to wear(pulls pants down) I like to Grouse & Coyote hunt so that requires a lot of walking & I need a good day pack to carry my calls, extra ammo, skinning knife, first aid, space blanket, shelter material(small tarp/rope/zip ties/lighter/flashlight/tp) also I like to carry a 20oz bottle of water & some jerky & trail mix.
any advice would be nice
THANKS

when i go shooting i have to hike out about a mile from my truck, i use a maxpedition pygmy falcon II. I've packed 100 rounds of 12gauge 200 rounds of .223, 250 rounds of 9mm, a CZ75b and 64oz of water in mine before. Pretty comfortably too, especially for such a small pack, 1400c.in.
You might want to check out Spec Ops "the" pack too which is almost twice as large at 2500 c.in..

I'm suggesting the style more than the make/model here, but a hydration pack is probably a good way to go. This one's about 15l and holds a 3l bladder and has room for all you listed and a spare jacket. They're really narrow, so they don't rub on brush and they don't move around on your back. I've been using this one all summer, and I'm finding I use it as much w/o the bladder as with it.

Camelbak makes some good size hydration packs. Also Oakley makes some excellent day size packs.

I like Maxpedition packs. I have a Pygmy Falcon for light, nice day hikes and a Condor II for hikes when I carry, rain gear, a lunch and snacks. Thet are reasonably priceed and weel made. Kirafu has nice packs but by the time you add options and extras they are very expensive.

Get yourself an Osprey! They are great packs. A little expensive but well worth the money.

I love Osprey's for hiking. If you want some tough gear take a look at Kifaru and Blackhawk Packs.

I belive the pack in Longbows avatar is a German Alpine pack...for the $21 I paid for it it's great. I would have easily paid double for it and still thought it was great.

The top flap has a layer of waterproof material underneath, and has four attachment points on the outside of it to lash down a heavy coat/shelter/blanket. The bottom of the pack has that same waterproof material so putting it down on wet rocks or ground won't get your supplies inside wet (and the rough bottom stops it from slipping of those aforementioned wet rocks!).

What about using a hunting vest? Here is one I have been looking at buying for pheasant and grouse hunting, put I haven't been getting out enough to justify it. http://www.pellaproducts.com/show_product/?product_id=72. I have tried this vest on at Sportsmans Warehouse and like the adjustability and the way you can distribute the weight between your shoulders and hips. I am pretty sure it is also available at Cabelas. It comes in camo, another with some blaze orange, and I remember seeing a straight brown one, but it may be discontinued.

Now if your looking for a backpack, your options are legion. I think you need to get a good handle on how much room you really want, since that will be the big driver. Your list does not look that large and could be take care of by a ~1800cu in pack at the largest. REI has good sales going on in clearance backpacks. I like my REI Lookout, but it is probably to large for your needs. The Traverse may be more to your size. I had an older model, the issue I had with it was it could pinch my neck a bit when I put a good load in it.
