I have a patent-pending project that involves a small 'gravity' knife, and another gadget that resembles a cassette player in functionality - push a button and the closed knife slides out butt first and is ejected into your hand.

Right now I'm only interested in talking about the knife. I spent a little time and mocked up the little knife I'd like to have you make, and attached it to this email. Basically, it needs to be a rectangle, with nothing sticking out (like the deployment button, which needs to be recessed) so that it can be ejected from the gadget, with no play.

I don't really know how you might go about this, but this is basically what I'm looking for. The blade should be pretty thick as well, so that it has some weight, and that it is sturdy. It would be nice if the blade was partially serrated, but doesn't have to be. I have a knife maker that will make blades out of D2 steel for about $13 (no serrations) for 250-500, but doesn't want to do one-offs, unless it is a sample for a bigger run. So for the prototype, I guess the blade doesn't have to be top notch but for the first prototypes, I need something.

The scales can be anything, maybe tough plastic? Aluminum? Steel? The target audience is military and LEO, so I want everything made in America, with American steel, and the best quality screws, etc. It needs to be something that feels solid in the hand and something that is worth talking with you, when you can't take much with you:)

What do you think? Is this something you would be interested doing? What would be a good estimate for design only? What would it cost if I already had the designs and just wanted you to make 5 of them? How about 250-500?
