Hello, so i posted a thread a little while ago asking for a recommendation for a knife for my dad's birthday. Everyone gave me really good recommendations but today his favorite knife was lost at work. It was a knock off emerson commander looking knife he got for $15 at a swapmeet. No matter how much i showed him Zts, spydercos, or anything he loved that swap meet knife (i even got him a recon 1 and he wont use it cause he thinks its too fancy and felt bad beating it up). He used it for work and uses the recurve part for stripping thick wire that wire strippers can't do. Im looking for a good recurve knife. Here's some things it needs :
-recurve
-strong lock (titanium frame lock if possible)
-have a big recurve and somewhat of a pointy tip
-something that is high rust resistant
I've thought about a sog vulcan tanto but ive never dealt with sogs or vg-10 before and don't know how it'll hold up (i went from a tenacious and leek straight to ZTs. Completely skipped everything in between)
Any recommendation will be greatly appreciated

Not sure on something that will meet all your points. If he was happy with a $15 knife then he's clearly not a steel snob - pretty much anything from a reputable company should do just as well, or better. VG-10 should be fine.

For recurve I'd suggest Spydercos. They have a number of hawkbill blades in VG-10 in the under $100 range, or H1 if you REALLY need rust resistant.

I have thought about the spyderco h1 knives but he cares a lot about looks and doesnt really like those. And yeah, i didnt think about him not being a steel snob, thank you for pointing that out. I just didnt want him having a knife go dull on him at work, its happened multiple times.

I think some of the Kershaw Ken Onion collabs have recurves, too, and look better than the Spydercos. Not sure I'd call them heavy use knives, though. I think Kershaw also does Emerson collabs, so they might have a Commander lookalike, too. I'd start with them, really.

Edit: try the Kershaw CQC-9

I actually might check those out. Thank you
(I just checked out the cqc 9 and i think that's perfect. Thank you so much for the suggestion)

No guy,

Either get him an Emerson Commander or CQC15. Those are like the perfect knives for him as they will be similar shape to his knockoff one. Also Emersons are rugged looking knives so he won't be shy to use it.

To the guys recommending Spydie Hawkbills. I don't think he meant hawkbills.

Agreed, the Emerson Commander is my favourite recurve.

for a super strong, affordable, mid-tier steel and beat-me-up workhorse folder, the recently discontinued Cold Steel Vaquero Large or Medium tick all the boxes except for lock type

the Nogales blade shape is really pointy and has a big, pronounced recurve

I just showed him the commander and what he thought and he fell in love with it. I think that's the way to go. Thank you so much

My dad wants the serrated version, how are the serrations? Ive read that emerson serrations are almost like a saw. And i imagine with the recurve it will be very aggressive and work well

Emersons Serrations are good. All serrations are very hard to sharpen at home.

In my opinion Emerson's or anybody's serrations are not like a saw. Despite visual similarities a saw and serrations are very different things.

Yeah i know the difference (when i first started getting into knives i couldn't tell the difference) i got the saw idea from a post on blade forums. I didnt realize the person was slightly exaggerating, i thought Emerson actually used something like a saw pattern for serrations (i dont know what i was thinking actually lol). Will a DMT serration sharpener help or will it just be better to take it to a professional sharpener?

I would be very careful taking your knives to "professional sharpeners". Many of them will grind your edge hot enough to ruin your temper. A DMT serration sharpener can help though I have yet to meet someone who will spend the time doing each individual serration with it.

Emerson will resharpen them for you. If you do go to a professional sharpener just make sure he knows what he's doing.
