Grohmann's are rarely seen as intimidating:

I have the Rat-3's in D2 as woods knives.. and must have gotten a bargain, considering how happy I am..

They're not precisely what you want but they make a strong arguement for D2 steel. I *really* like steel that doesn't require sharpening often for woods walks. I can spend hours if necessary sharpening with a diamond lap or a buffing wheel, if it will STAY sharp for a while.. D2 will definately Stay sharp.

It's odd to me there aren't more manufacturers using it, considering how well it handle rough work. That short 'field' knife likely will amaze you on performance. recommend you touch it up at home, first.. and don't trust the edge 'out of the box'.

I can't agree with the pendelton hunter suggestion. It's a great buy, but if sheeple-friendliness is a big priority the black kraton is questionable. To the sheeple's eye black = I want to stab you. I would go with a nice and pretty bark river. They might be in what you consider the "expensive" range but it's a real economy when you consider the quality and integrity of the owner.

Gotcha.

As long as the knife is legal to carry where you live, most people you meet in the woods won't care. And if the knife is packed away out of sight and not being shown off, no one will even know what you're carrying. And if you're in your own woods, carry whatever you want.

Best Wishes,

Well, I would look at Charles May, Gene Ingram and Tom Krein. All make incredible knives, that are tough, and NKP friendly. The 3 knives that I have pix of are all small enough to be used as pocket fixed blades. Here are a couple of pix of mine:
1. Charles May Fireant.

2. Gene Ingram Pocket Hippo.

3. Tom Krein TK-2.

I was gonna say a game warden but if you want a cheap work horse the 210 activator is a good choice IMO.
