Need a Small Fixed Blade

I bought a couple of SOG Field Pups for use in PSK's. When they arrived I carried one for a day and the leather sheath was TERRIBLE. The blade went right through the leather. This is SOGs new Kydex-edged (but mainly still leather) sheath.

So here goes. Since I won't carry the Field Pup I need a replacement. Any suggestions?
Here are the requirements:
1.)Good sheath design.
2.)Under 6" blade.
3.)A field utility tool, NOT designed primarily as a weapon.
4.)Under $125.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Cold Steel Master Hunter in Carbon V steel
Cold Steel SRK in Carbon V Steel
Swamp Rat Howling Rat (#1 choice)

Spend a few more bucks and get one of Bob Dozier's smaller fixed blades. You'll thank me.., and you can see 'em -HERE-

How about a Camillus/Becker BK-2 Campanion or BK-10 Crewman?

If you are otherwise happy with the Seal Pup, why not get a custom kydex sheath made? Either way, it might be worth the couple of dollars extar. Just my $0.02.

He's got the Field Pup, not the Seal Pup. Different models. ;)

I second Glockman99's recommendation of the Becker Companion or Crewman. Excellent knives and great customer service from Camillus.

The Companion looks to be very nice. Does anyone here actually own one?

I also like the looks of the Crewman, but the sheath looks flimsy. It reminds me of the sheath on the $19.95 survival knife (with hollow handle and compass) that I bought when I was a kid. Maybe it's just the picture.

BTW, I love the feel and the look of the Doziers, but they seem more like works of art than utility tools. I might be afraid to use one if I bought it.

WFAL it is a bit unclear why you don't get a sheath from Normark, say.

Also, when you say under 6" - what range are we talking about?

Dozier hardly makes a blade over 6". Anyway in particular, they are certainly users - Bob Dozier would have a fit I think, at any suggestion to the contrary. For life, as he says, also. My only reservation in recommending them is that they will be over your indicated price mark. Otherwise, they are what sprang immediately to mind, particularly after your 'non-weapon' line. (Although he makes those as well).

There are so many good knives that fit your perameters and the ones recommended so far would all make an excellent choice. So would the new Ontario Knives TAK. Five inch blade and Micarta handles at about $80.00.

Well done Keith.

I had exactly that knife, even that image, in mind but couldn't remember for the life of me what the name of it was. Good bang for buck, by all accounts. The guys in the Outdoors Forum on KnifeForums gave it the thumbs up, for example.

No idea what the sheath is like.

Dang...That looks alot like the Gerber Yari, which would also be a GREAT choice.

I would also suggest spending a little more if you can and getting a Dozier. I use a small straight personal as my EDC and I love the thing. Can't go wrong with a Dozier.

I do, and it's an excellent, stout knife...It's one of my favorites.

(BTW...It's the Campanion, not Companion.).

This sincerely is a shame. As you can probably attest, the knife itself is a very slick and competent little knife. In my five years working in management for SOG, I’ve felt the sheaths have been a serious weak point. Actually a couple days ago, I wrote on this topic in this thread. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve talked personally with Spencer on the topic of SOG sheaths not matching the quality of the knife/tool they carried.

The only thing I might recommend is to get a custom made sheath for your Field Pup, because it is that great of a knife.

Or, you can protest the low quality sheath and not only not continue to use the knife, stop buying SOG products (which would be a shame, but understandable). I would recommend that you write, email or fax Spencer Frazer (President and CEO of SOG) to share your concerns. Unfortunately, knowing Spencer personally and what motivates him to manufacture the sheaths he does, your comments will fall on deaf ears. But I always hope he might finally “get it.”

Oh, by the way, contact Loretta or Mike in the Consumer Services Department (at the contact information above) and complain about your sheath. Hopefully you can get a replacement sheath under warranty.

There is absolutely nothing worse than getting a really nice knife and not being able to carry it because the sheath cannot be trusted.

The Becker Companion is a nice knife and the sheath is good as well. Not very pretty but it works.

If you are also considering a custom then you might look at Mike Coopers work (forum name L6Steel ). Ask him about his Mighty Mite model. These are very well made and extremely durable. Price varies a bit depending on steel and handle material. I got mine with blue g10 and it meets your price requirement. I know he can also do wood or bone handles.

Note: It has been a while since I got mine from Mike, and his prices may very well have changed, but at the time I got it, the prices were a steal.

Is this a new Camillus/Becker knife? I have a Becker Campanion, and now I'm wondering what the Becker Companion looks like...Maybe I'll have to get one.:).
