yo;

a mate of mine has designed a pretty neat little hatchet and we'de like to make a few of them.

what we need is a lump of decent grade steel about 300mm X 150mm X 15mm thick. (that's roughly 12" x 5 " X 5/8th").

a piece 22" x 5" x 5/8th" would yield two hatchets.

my local steel supplier can only get big sheets in and that would cost a bomb for what are essentially prototypes.

so, does anyone know anywhere that i might acquire such a lump of steel? it doesn't have to be super top notch stuff. Spring steel or Stainless would be fine.

cheers and thanks in advance for your help.

Jason, not to hi-jack this thread, but have you ordered form McMasters? They seem to have great prices.

I have ordered from McMasterr once or twice. Their prices are reasonable if they have the particular alloy in the size you need.
For a really thick piece for a hatchet though I would look straight away for a shop that does springs for heavy trucks and see if I could pick up a thick spring cut-off for free or offer them a few bucks. The alloy should be ok for this useage, a little experimenting should tell you. Stock in that size isn't likely to be cheap to buy or ship.

you might check with a local machine shop or "foundry" and ask about any scrap they might have on hand.
if you tell them what you want to do, they should be able to hook you up for little or no $$.

Sambo,

I have some leaf spring, what looks to be 5140, although its only 3/8" thick I believe.

You're welcome to some for the cost of shipping a flat rate box to ya. Here's the analysis thread where it was discussed, http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=691439. It was surmised it came off a dump truck.

All the best, Phil
