I am looking for a camp knife that is stainless steel. I am going to be going on a saltwater canoe trip. I am looking for somthing around a 4" blade. I have thought about Fallkniven, Graham Brothers and Some of the Bark Rivers with 12c27. This is going to be a knife of all trades and master of none, I am going to use it for everything. Can you give me some ideas on both knives and what kind of stainless steel. I am also using this as an excuse with the wife to buy another good knife. Thanks for you help.

I would chose a Fallkniven H1 or an Extrema Ratio Shrapnel, but Entrek also produces very good knives in 440C.

....I took an Entrek "Companion" on a 7 day wilderness canoe trip down the lower Rio Grande canyons several years ago. Great knife. Frankly, however, I mostly used my Spyderco Military....and it was ALL I really needed. VERY light weight and quick to "deploy", slices like a laser and holds that edge for a looooog time.

But you want a new fixed blade.. and well you should want to get something "new" for your trip; I predict it will only add to the enjoyment of your experience. ( Everyone can relate ....we are ALL looking for that "excuse" to buy another nice knife. ).

Although I don't own one.....I very much like the look and design of the BRKT "Snowy River" and know Mike's knives are great performers.

I'm a fan of the Swamp Rat line of knives -- in your case, a Swamp Rat Mischief M-6.

A little pricey, but an incredibly tough blade with an unbeatable warranty. It will do any chore you ask it to...and it will definitely outlive you (you'll be handing it down to your grandkids). The steel isn't stainless -- but it's pretty close (and the blade has a VERY tough coating -- I've beaten the daylights out of mine and just scuffed it a bit).

There are larger Swamp Rat versions or even Busse Combat versions ($$!) if you need an even larger chopper.

If you don't want to pay for INFI or SR101 steel, consider Becker's BK9 or BK9HH. Note quite as high quality, not quite as long lived -- but also considerably cheaper (can be had for under $80).

The first thing that popped into my mind was the Nimravus, too.
4.5" fixed blade, 154 stainless, black coating for rust...

But I really like the look of that Snowy River that Gramps posted. There's something about natural handle materials and classic designs that just go with the outdoors...

Swamp rat not stainless but pretty close ????????????????????????
Sticking to your origional spec I would have to second that recommendation for Blackjack Knives.I have the Grunt which is a little larger than you said but one hell of a nice knife!!!

Try dropping by the "Makers" forum, and checking out some of the fixed blades there. I've gotten a lot of good knives at great prices. I also feel good about supporting the guys on the forum.

David Wesner and Nick Allen (NWA) are currently making camp knives for me. Both of these gentlemen are a pleasure to deal with and make fine blades. David might be of particular interest, since he works with stainless. I think his preference is CPM154.

Agreed. There are a lot of great deals to be had on the makers' "for sale" forum. Check it out.

Unless you might want to chop down a tree with the knife, get yourself a Spyderco Temperance...I have a pair of 'em, and they are excellent.

If you want a good, sturdy, hard working knife that is small....the Graham Razel will fill the bill....not too expensive, and nice to look at.

Glockman,do you not worry about the small tang on the Temperance?
I have one coming at x-mas and had ordered it before I knew about about the tiny tang !
