Need advice: A boy's first knife?

Taz and other members of this board:
I am truly humbled by your very generous offer, and, more importantly, the friendship and kindness of all of the participants here. I recieved a personal email from Taz this evening, and I will get my son to gather 'round the warm glow of the old computer terminal tomorrow after school, and I'm home from the day job, we'll compose a response to Taz. I wanted to specifically thank Taz, but also thanks to all that have given great advice so far. We sit every night, and he reads with anticipation, the constructive and creative ideas that have been posted so far. I'm not sure what else to say......(head lowered, and wringing of hands) Accepting a gift such as this is sometimes difficult, damned pride gets in the way too often I guess.........Thank you.
BTW, my friends call me "jame"

Taz, you really are someone special

Farmboy and son, congratulations. Junior is now off to a heck of a good start. When he wants to buy another knife he should look at CRKT Kiss, Urban Shark or M16 zytel range. All good deals IMHO.

WAY TO GO, TAZ!

As the grandfather of nine kids, ages 8 to 18, here is my humble opinion. A fixed blade knife is cool, but kids can't carry it very often, and unless they do a lot of fishing or squirrel hunting, they don't have many opportunities to use it.
Folders are something else. Kids can use them more often, and they can carry them anywhere, except in school, and therefore have more opportunities to learn not only how to use them, but care for them. And that's dad's job; to teach them the basics. Bud

The camping knife within price limit $25-30 for 11-years old boy?
I would advise CRKT MDP Stiff KISS fixed blade. It really works super simply but reliably.
If your son would like a folder think about Spyderco Calypso Jr. Lightweight. In my opinion this is one of the very best lightweight all around folders.

You are very welcome, farmboy and son! I emailed Mike Turber, so hopefully he will send the knife out shortly. Enjoy!

Not yet, Taz. I'm sure it will be here this week. At least I hope so. This kid is so excited about it that he wanted me to come from work every day during lunch to see when it arrives. I'll let you know when it's here. Maybe I can talk him into giving it a review!

hehehe. I know that feeling! i'm only 20, so I am not too far past that stage of waiting for the little brown truck! currently, i am awaiting a grizzly grinder! Well, I hope it will arrive soon and that he will enjoy it!

HEY TAZ!!! The knife that you gave to my son arrived today. Man, talk about a thrilled kid! I can hear him snapping it open and shut right now. I have to believe we have a budding knife knut on our hands here. As soon as I got home, he wanted me to show him how to use the Sharpmaker that you guys "talked" me into. (I gotta get out of here, my wife wants my hide already, and she doesn't know that I'm now looking a a Busse Basic. I'm blaming you guys, but it's not working.) At any rate, after he is fully aquainted with his new Camillus folder, I'll probably profile the blade for him, and then show him how to keep it sharp. BTW it was a perfect choice for this young man. Good quality, short, easy to work with blade. Lightweight and small enough for young hands. Thank you ever so much!

Glad to hear your son likes it! I know the feeling of my first knife. Cut myself within 10 minutes of having it and i was hooked since! Hopefully he won't do that! Well, I gotta go study. Glad to hear he got the knife and is on his way to becoming a knife addict!

A "first" knife is something very special.. I still have mine 50 years later... I think that I'd support the SAK Tinker for a slip joint in the pocket and maybe think about a mora swedish fixed blade too - should still not be too far off the price range.. For a sharpener= I really like the little folding diamond stone .. not sure who makes it. but it has a key ring attachment as well. I hope your son enjoys his knife for many years to come!
