Ok guys here is the deal. I had a knife for sale on ebay. A very nice limited edition forum knife, that I had offered for sale here recently. The knife has been out of my possesion for several weeks and in a family member's gun safe. It recieved a llot of damage ehile it was away, and this was unknown to me. I have refunded the money of course, and offered a knife for free as a token of my shame, but is there really anything I can do to make this right? Below is a copy of the email I sent to the buyer. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, James

I have sent you a refund for the item you purchased. I had given it to a family member to store in his safe, along with some other items. I went and retrieved the knife from him today, and it is not in good shape. He took it out of it's box (which was in the garage and is very scratched up) before putting it in the gun safe. At some point it had "fallen" (his words) down off the side shelf and landed in the bottom of the rifle storage area where it recieved several scratches to the blade, as well as a couple of pretty good gouges in the carbon fiber(before he noticed that it was missing), and it seems to have a little rust on the liners, due to lack of dessicant in the safe. All in all, I would say that it is ruined. I apologize for this happening. I can't understand how one man could be so stupid, but that is another matter. I am embarresed to say the least, so in addition to your full refund, which has already been sent via paypal, I will also send you a BM Mel pardue 330 gents knife in an effort to try to make this right. I cannot apologize for this enough, and please let me know if I can do anything else for you. If you already have the knife I offered, please let me know and I will see what else I can send as an apology knife.

I am very sorry,

James Mason

It sounds to me like you did the best that you could with a bad situation.

Your desire to make things right with the buyer is commendable.

If I was the buyer I'd take my refund and nothing else, no hard feelings. It's unfortunate that the knife got beat up, but you obviously are't trying to scam anybody. Just one of those things that happens.

Hope everything works out well for you.

I hope that this fellow is as understanding as you guys. I have worked hard to have a good rep on ebay and here. I hope I haven't ruined it with a bad decision and misplaced faith in someone that "married in" the family. I gues that I will have to get some type of lockable storage cases until I can afford a safe of my own

alpha,

I would have been fine with what you did, and wouldn't be frightened off from another deal with you.

Good on ya alphamaniv !

Your e-mail was simple, to the point, and encorporates the right touch of sincerity ! While the damage to the knife wasn't your fault. . .I think that your perfectly worded apology and the refund would make anyone happy.

The offer of the Benchmade, which shouldn't be expected, was a very nice touch too !

My hat is off to ya. . .for bein' such a stand-up nice guy !

alphamaniv,

Whilst one may feel a little peeved at first, your appology is straight forward and honest. Your offer of the appology blade speaks volumes about your integrity and we all know that $hit happens.

You might want to call Angie at BM. I've heard she can swing wonders.

Alphamaniv, you're one of the good!

Cheers,
BJB :D

I would have been OK with what you did. Unfortunately $hit happens.
Your offer was very generous.

Update. The fellow I was dealing with has responded, and has been a complete gentleman about the whole thing. That really take a load off my mind. I was really getting sick at my stomach! I guess the moral is: Never let your good stuff out of your sight, and if bad things happen, be upfront with the truth as soon as you can and most people will understand. I could kick myself over this whole thing and I could put that knife in someone's eye.I was always taught that you treat somebody eles things not like your own, but like they belonged to someone else that would be wanting them back. The guys ebay ID is apo143 I don't know if he ever comes here, or what name he would use, but he is better than good in my book. One heck of a nice guy.

Alpha,
We all know some clowns like that in our family.
It sounds to me you went double the extra click to make this customer happy, stuff like this makes me proud to be a member of this fine forum.
I 2nd Billy joe bob though, call Angie at B/M she is a very easy person to talk to and will take care of your abused B/M.
I e-mailed her about buying at RETAIL a new blade for a 910 Stryker which had been turned into a trainer (blade ground down and point rounded off) she offered to replace the old blade with a new 2003 model, all for the paltry sum of 25.00 bucks.
The W/R dept there now is 2nd to none. Ron

Could not have been handled better - figures that you are from Arkansas :D.
(omitting a certain president, sure seems to be a lot of fine folks over there)

I know I'm a newb and all, but I'd deal with ya anytime, sounds like you're an above-and-beyond kinda guy. Well done...

Thanks guys, but the one who should get all the kudos is the fellow that didn't get the knife he wanted. He could have screwed me on ebay and all over any forums, but he was a complete gentleman and handled in stride. I wish everything else could be made right. I am going to try to contact BM, but I doubt that they have any of those scales around, and the Blade would have to be refinished and then probably re-lasered. Even if they did all of that it would still be a refurb. I just blame myself for knowing better(deep down) but convincing myself otherwise. I have an Old Belgium made browning .22 that was my dads when he was 12, mine when I was 12 and my 11 year old will get on his next birthday, it is now covered with a light sprinkling of rust all over and the front sight is bent. Lesson learned, but the price was WAY too high on this one.
