I just got back from afghanistan (army infantry), Go for an ESEE knife, the 4 or 6. There isnt much chance hes going to need to fight with it, Theres alot of chance hes goiung to have to use it as a tool. Hell probably be living in a little fob made of hescos and hell have to make whatever he needs, so he needs a good solid utility knife that can work as a fighting knife, not a fighting knife that can barely do utility work.

The ESEE-6 has plenty of blade and a flat grind that will allow him to easily perform anything he needs to do, and at 3/16 inch thick of simple 1095 hes not going to have to worry about breaking it. The sheath is solid and will blend in With MARPAT if you go with tan just fine, its a great knife at a reasonable price.

Ive always had honorable dealings with derrick at KSF : http://www.knivesshipfree.com/ESEE-Knives-ESEE-6p-Knife-wLinen-Micarta-Handle-1095-Steel-ESEE-6p

another word to the wise and gift idea for a guy going into a hot zone ENO hammock with bug net:

Those things are worth their weight in gold, Hescoes which your son will in all probability be living in shift and move with rain, because they are filled with dirt and they turn to mud, everything on the ground gets soaked in mud, and if you are asleep on the ground or on a cot you cna sink a little in and then be covered in mud, wet and miserable with no real way to get clean except for baby wipes.
Another problem with living on the ground is there is a host of snakes and insects that your son will be cohabitating with, we had a guy almost get killed by a damn snake in the middle of the night, he survived numerous firefights almost gets offed by a freaking snake, that would have been a true tradgedy. another big problem is malaria, When your son deploys hell probably start taking doxycyclin : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doxycyclin

The thing is that doxycyclin isnt all that effective the military makes you take it because it has some effect but theres no garantee that it will protect your son,

ENO hammocks are great because they are light and packable each end had a D-ring/carabiner that you can hook into the wire on the outside of hescos or onto something else with 550 chord and you cna suspend yourself inside the hesco barrier and be off the floor.

They pack down small and even if hes packing light and not using a full ruck he can just strap it to the outside of the pack and go with it adding the the misquito net just keeps all those damn biting insects away which is in and of itself a small miracle.

Im, just telling you this because small comforts mean alot to a guy in the feild.

Good luck to your son and tell him to keep his head down.

razorsdescent,
Thank YOU for your response. Thanks also for the experienced advice. It's invaluable.
The service and sacrifice of yourself, as well as that of all your brothers in arms is immeasurable and beyond thanks!
Glad you made it home.

Semper Fi Brother,

Don't know if it's too late to give my opinion, but I've handled the D2 Improved fighting knife, and plenty of others. If he isn't issued the standard Bayonet, which is a great knife all on its own, then the D2 would be Ok. However it's tough to sharpen in comparison to other blades out there. Marine to Marine, I'd go for a ESEE 6 Clip Point. I just got out myself and wish I had one of those earlier. I've got an original KA-Bar and the OKC-3S bayonet, but ESEE's blades blow them out of the water. The ESEE 3Mil Clip Point is my next purchase on the list, but knowing the requirements of a basically trained marine, the ESEE 6 CP will be more appropriate, for penetrating body armor and reaching arteries, veins, and the like. (That's what a fighting knife is for!:P) I would use the 3Mil for more mundane applications.
After reading Razorsdescent's response, I'd have to agree with him wholeheartedly. My opinions come from the fact that I've been trained as a Martial Arts Instructor (MCMAP), and the knife training we've received. Your son is required to have some basic understanding of knife fighting. That being said, can't go wrong with the ESEE6 at all.

Semper Fidelis- and easy days for your son. He's in fine company.

I am looking for a knife in the 7" blade range + or - and USA made. My Son's only real criteria is a good solid knife with a strong, secure sheath that offers multiple attaching options.

+1 ESEE-6

6.5" blade, 0.186" full flat grind with a useable choil, solid full tang design with slab handles you can remove for cleaning. 1095 steel with a good heat treat.

Everything you want, nothing you don't want. Made in USA.

 What about a Cold Steel SRK w/black finish blade. Good knife, good price, and a quality blade.:)

The KA-BAR D2 Extreme would be an okay choice. I don't think they offer it in straight edge though, only serrated. I'd go with a one piece knife though, like what the others recommended. ESEE's are great. The D2 will put up with anything on the blade, the butt cap not so much. That breaks off, and it will render the knife handleless.

Good luck!

First off, i wish your son all the best on the journey his about to take.
I’ve been and currently am on my own journey and I have used a lot of knives for every day tool use and self defense, I finally got one of Daniel Winkler’s belt knife, and a can say that its the best knife I’ve ever had, the quality of it is outstanding, and it built to last.
The knife measures 9" overall- blade length is 4 3/4", it has a full tapered tang and its made of 5160 steel. (It holds a grate edge)
It’s one of doe’s knives that I can see handing down to my son one day. Contact Mr. Winkler he’s a great man to deal whit and he does offer a military discount.
