Ok I have the Rat Daddy that I posted the thread about. I also have a Ratweiler on its way to me shortly. I have a very nice quote to make them both satin and re-install the origional handles onto the Rat Daddy. I am contemplating adding liners to them and I am also looking for a small knife to make it a 3 piece set. I want this knife to have matching gen1 scales and be in the 4-5 ish range. That will give me the Rat Daddy 9+, The Ratweiler 7 + and the last one to fill the 4-5 ish range. I have seen a knife Called Safari Skinner that looked like it had potential. Any suggestions on a Rat meeting my criteria?

Thx in advance,

Rob

I was going to post this in the Rat section but more people frequent here that have Rats in addition to Busse and Scrapyard. If need be , please move it over to Ratville.

There are many great blades in this range to pick from....

I would suggest the Rodent 4, Ratmandu, Basic 4, 511, Scrapper 5, Street Scrapper 4, Howling Rat, Dumpster Mutt, War Dog, Yard Keeper etc....

I guess it would really depend on what you can afford and what your steel and handle preferences are....

Just my $.02

I have HRLM thats perfect. However I am going with the Gen 1 handle theme.

I need :
Swamprat
4-5in blade
Gen 1 handles...to match the Rat Daddy and Rat Weiler.

I don't really think you can go wrong with a RMD....it's just a great all around knife. I'll also recommend the 511 for the awesome value. The Rodent is another that I can highly recommend, price is great too.

The current Rodent Solution scales have the horizontal grooves/ridges to match the older rats, but the knife is a little smaller than your range (only 3.5" blade) - still an awesome knife, very handy size.

At the size requested, I'd look for an SAR Rat or the Dog Skinner. The Safari Skinner and Dog Hunter are both a little smaller. Here's a couple of good threads with pics:

Ahh there we go. Figures It would have to be a 3rd rare knife to make this triplet set. Time to work my search foo and make this happen.

Thx

Ok before get set to start up my search, are there any other blades that meet my Criteria of Swamprat 4-5 in blade length with Gen 1 handles besides these....

Safari skinner
SAR Rat
Dog Skinner

Once I have all the possible matches Im gonna sort through the suggestions and pick one then the hunt will begin.

THe RMD with the flat grind seen above in legals pic 4th from left in top row is the knife to own in your size range IMHO.

THe only way its better is if it has the orange & green swamprat color g10:)

Undoubtably a fine blade but I am making a matched set of 3. SO I need Gen 1 handles for this.

Right now I think of these that I listed that the SAR Rat would fit my set-up best

Safari skinner
SAR Rat
Dog Skinner

Are there any others besides the above that are Swamprat, between 4 and 5 inches with Gen 1 handles?

Scroll down to find this (includes old and new blades):

Small - Medium micarta/G10 handled knives:

Vexillarius (Linen) (D2) = 5.25 oz; .14”; 3.75” blade (from front of choil); 8.25” oal

Rodent Solution (SR101) = 6.4 oz; .1875"; 3.5" blade; 8.125" oal

Rat Hunter (SR101) = 7.5 oz; .1875”; 4” blade; 8.25” oal
Safari Skinner (D2).. = 6.75 oz; .125”; 3.75” blade; 8.75” oal
SAR Rat (SR101)…. = 10.2 oz; .25”; 4.5” blade; 9.5” oal

HCLE 4.0” blade (2008 SE micarta) (154CM) = 6.5 oz; .17”; 4.” blade; 8.75” oal
HCLE 4.0” blade (2010 G10) (154CM)......... = 6.7 oz; .17”; 4.” blade; 8.69” oal

Dog Skinner (black micarta) (D2).. = 7.25 oz; .15”; 4.25” blade; 9.4375” oal
Dog Skinner (2-tone micarta) (D2) = 7.5 oz; .15”; 4.25” blade; 9.4375” oal

HRLM (micarta) (SR101) = 9 oz; .19"; 4.13" blade; 9.3" oal

Rodent 4 (SR101) = ? oz, .1875"; 4.625" blade; 9.5" oal

Desert Jack (micarta) (SR101) = 10 oz; .175”; 6” blade; 11.25” oal

Ratmandu (G10) (SR101)..... = 11 oz; .189"; 5.3125" blade; 10.5" oal
Ratmandu (micarta) (SR101) = 9.4 - 10 oz; thickness varies over the years - reports of: .173", .189", .2" thick; 5.3125" blade; 10.5" oal

RatManDeaux (RMDx LE) (Black Paper micarta) (SR101) (FULL Height Convex grind) = 12.2 oz; "approx." .1875"; 6” blade; 11.25” oal

M6 (SR-101)(micarta) = 16.2 oz; .235"; 6" blade; 11.68" oal

Rodent 6 (SR-101) - (Convex/Saber) = ? oz; .25"; 6.375" blade; 11.75" oal

Mini Mojo (SR101) (blade catch) (micarta) = 17.6 oz; .245”; 6.875” blade; 12.625” oal
Mini Uncle Mojo (SR101) (No blade catch) (micarta) = 17.3 oz; .245”; 6.875” blade; 12.625” oal

Then search out images (google) of those meeting your criteria to see what peaks your interest, but I think my initial recommendations will be what you return to ;) The D-2 Dog Skinner LE is a grail for many, and it sounds like you want satin finishes on all anyway. Otherwise the SAR Rat is similar. What did you think of snwbrdr202's images? If the skinner and SAR are too small, the Desert Jack is next up in size from the old school line.

Yea I have seen that stat sheet, thanks, as well as Snwbrdr202s pictures. Right now I am leaning towards the SAR Rat. Just tryin to make sure Im not missing any others besides the ones mentioned.

There are only three knives with the old school handle that are in the 4 to 5" range, The Safari Skinner at 4", the SAR Rat at 4.75" and the Dog Skinner at 4.75". All three are excellent. If you don't mind going a smidge smaller you can go with the Rat Hunter. A smidge larger and you have the Desert Jack. Good luck with your search.

Ahh perfect, thank you. Of the Dog skinner, Safari Skinner and the Sar Rat I prefer the SAR Rat. This is based on looks alone mind you.

I found this from a different thread and it shows some of the knives in question:

For micarta handles, besides the suggestions already given, you could consider the Swamp Rat Dog Skinner (D2 optional), Ratmandu (4.75" blade) or Howling Rat Little Mischief (HRLM), all in SR101 steel from Swamp Rat.

Swamp Rat Dog Skinner D2 steel IIRC top and SAR Rat lower

I have a HRLM and love it. If I could get some old school gen 1 handles and slap em on her I would. Since I cannot, I am liking the SAR Rat so far. The desert Jack might be a bit to big and all the ones I have seen were brown handled. The Rat Hunter is nice but I prefer the Sar shape. Here is a picture Rat Finkenstein had posted in a old thread fom 2005 picturing a Rat Daddy and a SAR Rat. That exact handle is what I have on my Rat DAddy and Ratweiler:

Yeah, not too many to choose from, and that stat-sheet is pretty exhaustive. I love the smooth lines of the Dog Skinner vs. the clip style of the SAR, but that's me. I'd like to see a comparison of the SAR and RMD...

Do you plan to satin-finish whatever you get?

Yep. I will have all 3 satined...Rat Daddy, Ratweiler and SAR Rat. I am contemplating adding liners as well but not sure.

The SAR Rat is great and is a brute as far as thickness. Nigh indestructible but the drawback is a thicker knife.

Another plus is that the SAR Rat matches your Daddy and 'Weiler better as it is a clip point.
